Plays wild-card teams rely on

Texans, Bengals will keep it simple, while Lions all about slowing Brees

Texans quarterback T.J. Yates scrambles against the Bengals defense.

ANALYSIS

Mike Tanier

Playoff time means diagram time, strategy fans!

This week, I will be drawing up signature plays for each of the eight teams participating in the first round of the playoffs. This article covers Saturday?s games. It?s your chance to brush up on the X?s and O?s, and to get a closer look at an offense you may not have paid much attention to during the season.

Let?s start with two rookie quarterbacks why rely on play-action to make up for their lack of experience. We?ll then move on to some vintage Drew Brees deep passing, and the type of defense the Lions will use to stop him. (Or at least try.)

Houston Texans
As impressive as T.J. Yates has been this season, he is still a rookie, and his role in the Texans offense is carefully scripted. Gary Kubiak?s offense is full of simple reads that are designed to take advantage of his team?s rushing attack, limiting Yates? decision making while forcing defenders to worry about the run first and treat pass coverage as a side job.

Figure 1 shows the Texans on 1st-and-10 early in Sunday?s Titans game. First down is Kubiak?s favorite passing down with Yates because it is the best opportunity to catch the defense playing conservatively. The squiggly line shows pre-snap motion: tight end James Casey (86) starts at wide receiver on the left side, but moves back to offset fullback on the right. (In a typical game, Owen Daniels might replace Casey on this play, but several starters rested in this game). Casey?s simple motion accomplishes two things: It turns a passing formation into a power running formation; and it changes the Titans' coverage responsibilities. Casey the wide receiver was covered by a safety. Casey the fullback is covered by a linebacker who is also assigned to an interior gap against the run.

At the snap, Yates, Casey, the running back, and the entire line veer to the left. This is heavy run action, and the Titans' defensive front and linebackers follow the offense. If this were a running play, the Texans would use their cut blocking tactics to chop down defenders as they moved laterally. But this is a play-action pass; Casey reverses field and leaks into the right flat, and Yates turns to flip a short pass to him before the unblocked linebacker delivers a blow. With the linebackers out of position, Casey has room for a 15-yard gain.

Casey has extra running room because the wide receivers take the lid off the defense, running deep routes that clear the cornerbacks and deep safety out of the action. Kubiak likes to throw deep off play action, particularly on first down. Instead of playing duck-and-cover with Yates in the game, Kubiak has created a simple sequence of runs, deep passes, and play-action rollouts like these that keeps the chains moving and the defense honest. Little wrinkles, like Casey?s motion, make it hard for the defense to load up to stop the run.

The Bengals also use play-action and clever wrinkles to make life easier for their quarterback. Thanks to the league?s most impressive rookie receiver, the Bengals are also not shy about throwing deep.

Cincinnati Bengals
Another rookie quarterback, another 1st-and-10 rollout pass! You should not be surprised. Plays like these are the best way to let young quarterbacks use their arms and athleticism to pick up big chunks of yardage on early downs. For the Bengals, that means finding ways to allow Andy Dalton to throw to A.J. Green against single coverage, or at least out-of-position double coverage. Coordinator Jay Gruden will go out of his way to make a bomb to Green look like a running play before the snap, even if it means using a sixth offensive lineman in place of a tight end.

The player marked with a ?T? in Figure 2 is backup tackle Dennis Roland. With Roland, a fullback, and a tight end on the field, the Bengals have created an incredibly run-heavy personnel grouping. Green is isolated against Texans cornerback Jonathan Joseph in this diagram, a matchup you will see often on Saturday. Joseph is one of the league?s better cornerbacks, and the Texans also have a deep safety to help with Green, but teams are learning that even double coverage is not enough against one of the NFL?s best leapers.

Green runs a ?flag? route, faking a move to the corner before turning and running to the post. Joseph loses a step during this double move. The safety is briefly drawn in by the fake handoff. The Bengals use both Roland and the fullback as blockers, and the handoff action slows the pass rush, giving Green time to run the deep route and Dalton a clean throwing lane.

Dalton under-throws his pass to Green, giving the defense a chance to converge. No matter, Joseph is too late to arrive, and the safety has no chance to beat Green to a jump ball. The play nets 36 yards and sets up a field goal. The Green jump pass is the Bengals? greatest weapon, and the best way to stop it is to pressure Dalton -- not easy to do when there are extra blockers on the field.

To hammer a point home: the Texans and Bengals plays shown above are both one-read passes. The Yates-Casey play is designed to set up the easy flat pass, and Dalton only has one other receiver in the pattern. The weakness of using a rookie quarterback is that the passing game becomes programmed, so defenders do not have to worry about second options or check-down receivers. That favors the defense, and it creates the likelihood of a low-scoring game, just like the 20-19 Texans win over the Bengals in December.

The Lions will not have the luxury of predictability when they face the Saints.

Kragthorpe: Ute motivator, baseball ?Miracle,? memorial ace are favorite stories

Jerry Sloan retired and Greg Ostertag came out of retirement. Deron Williams and Mehmet Okur were traded. Jordan Wynn was injured and Jake Heaps transferred.

The big stories just kept coming, as they always do. Yet when I look back every year, the breaking stories are usually not the ones that stick with me. So these are my favorite stories of 2011:

?The Ute motivator

Jay Rudd would have found a way to join Utah?s football team in El Paso, Texas, for the Sun Bowl, I?m sure. The Utes? season was not the same without Rudd, who died in March after a lengthy illness at age 37. Born with Down syndrome, he was incurably upbeat, as reflected in the short speeches he would deliver to the team after Thursday practices.

The relationship that coach Kyle Whittingham developed with Rudd said a lot about each of them, while illustrating how much a developmentally disabled person could contribute, all because Whittingham treated him as capable and dependable.

Rudd loved being around the Utes. He would have addressed the Utes in El Paso, led the team onto the field and celebrated the victory over Georgia Tech ? and probably taken some credit for it.

? The baseball ?Miracle?

The Miracle League game was one of those events that had an obligatory feel, as an auxiliary part of the Triple-A All-Star Game festivities at Spring Mobile Ballpark. It turned into the best hour of the summer for me.

Story continues below

The patients from the Shriners Hospitals for Children used plastic bats to take whacks at rubber balls, tossed slowly from a few feet away. Most of them used motorized chairs to make their way the around the bases. It was an emotional experience, simply because the children were having so much fun.

?These kids don?t need our pity or us to feel sorry for them,? said Omaha?s Clint Robinson, one of the players who was assigned to act as a buddy, standing with a boy or girl (ages 4-15) in the field and escorting the child around the bases.

Participation was pretty much mandatory for the All-Stars, but they may have benefited the most.

? The memorable ace

Brett Lazar and four other friends of Rick Crankshaw were playing a round in memory of him at Mountain Dell Golf Course in October, carrying a picture of him and acting out how he would play certain shots.

So as Lazar stood on the Lake Course?s No. 9 tee, his teammates in the scramble format were invoking help. ?We really need one, Rick,? one of them said.

Imagine the response when Lazar delivered a hole-in-one. ?I?m not a real religious person,? Bob Haywood said later, but it was like Rick was there. I don?t know how to explain it.?

My story emerged from a simple, special request. Lazar asked if this version of the standard hole-in-one report could be published. Here it is:

German, French stocks up in light trading (AP)

FRANKFURT, Germany ? Global stock markets opened a risk-filled new year still smarting from a rough 2011, as many exchanges remained closed. German and French stocks rose in light volumes as a a reading of manufacturing activity in Europe improved.

Germany's DAX closed up 3 percent Monday at 6,075 while the French CAC-40, which ended 2011 17 percent lower, climbed 2 percent to 3,222. Stocks fell in South Korea and closed flat in Taiwan.

Trading was light with the New York, London and most Asian stock exchanges closed.

Investors appeared to be reassured by European purchasing managers survey index numbers that improved in December from November. Activity in the manufacturing sector was up, but at levels that still show a fifth straight month of contraction.

Many of the world's leading indexes are coming off a down year. Britain's FTSE was off 5.6 percent by year end, Japan's Nikkei fell 17 percent to its lowest close since 1982, and the Standard & Poor's 500 showed zero gain.

Data releases later in the week such as eurozone inflation on Wednesday and German factory orders and U.S. non-farm payrolls on Friday will give traders more grist. The U.S. employment figure is expected to rise by some 150,000 after increasing 120,000 in November.

Markets face an uncertain first quarter as eurozone leaders try to get control of government debt woes that threaten to harm the global economy with another financial meltdown.

Much of the attention in coming weeks will center on Italy, the eurozone's third-largest economy and the focal point of the eurozone's struggle to deal with a crisis caused by heavy levels of government debt. Fears of default on those debts mean that bond investors demand ever-higher interest, making it a challenge for the new government of Prime Minister Mario Monti to roll over euro53 billion ($69 billion) in debt maturing in the first quarter. If a country can no longer borrow affordably to pay off bonds that are maturing, it faces eventual default or a bailout.

Debt woes may be compounded by at least a mild recession over the last quarter of 2011 and the first part of 2012.

In Asia, South Korea's Kospi, which lost 11 percent of its value last year, closed nearly unchanged at 1,826.37. South Korea's tech sector move higher, with Samsung Electronics up 2.1 percent and LG Electronics gaining 2.3 percent. Steel giant POSCO slid 1.1 percent and Korea Electric Power shed 1.8 percent.

Taiwan's TAIEX, which was also open for business Monday, fell 1.7 percent to 6,952.21. Foxconn Technology, the world's biggest contract electronics manufacturer, which makes iPads and iPhones for Apple Inc., fell 0.9 percent. Personal computer maker Acer Inc. shed 2.3 percent.

The Asian-Pacific region's major benchmarks, including Japan's Nikkei 225 index, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index and Australia's S&P ASX 200, were closed.

Last year was one that traders would prefer to forget: most Asian equity indexes closed out 2011 deeply in the red. The Nikkei in Tokyo ended the year at 8,429.45 ? its lowest closing since 1982.

China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index, closed Monday, endured a 21 percent loss for the year as the impact of Beijing's multibillion-dollar stimulus faded and the government tightened curbs on lending and investment to cool blistering economic growth.
