Harman bringing trio of JBL speakers and pair of AV receivers to CES

Harman has joined several other companies in jumping the CES gun, announcing five new products it's bringing to the show. First up is the JBL Charge, a hardy Bluetooth speaker which promises an impressive 12 hours of tunes on a single charge. If you are willing to sacrifice some of that play time, you can siphon power from the internal battery to other kit via the speaker's USB port. Expected to start shipping in Q1 2013, you should be able to pick one up for around $149. Joining JBL's OnBeat range are the Mini and Rumble speaker docks, which are both compatible with Apple's Lightning connector. The Mini is a fairly standard dock which will play and charge for up five hours on battery power, and should be available this coming March for around $149. The Rumble, however, is a little more equipped, with both Lightning and Bluetooth streaming options, as well as a 4.5-inch, "down-firing subwoofer" for bass junkies. That extra muscle is reflected in the price, though, which is likely to be $399 when it hits stores next spring.

A couple of new Kardon-branded A/V receivers from Harman are also coming along to CES -- the AVR 2700 and 3700. Both have multi-zone functionality, are stacked with wireless features including internet radio, AirPlay and DLNA connectivity, and can be controlled using iOS and Android apps. The AVR 2700 has eight HDMI ports and 4K video scaling for when you get round to buying that UHDTV, as well as 7.1-channel audio (at 100 watts per channel). The AVR 3700 adds WiFi connectivity, and has 7.2 channels (at 125 watts per channel) for adding a second woofer to your setup. When they become available to purchase in Q1 2013, expect wallet damage to the tune of $799 for the 2700, or $999 for the 3700. You can get a closer look at all the Harman products in the press shots below (complete with unnecessary reflection), and if you're into PRs, there are a whole bunch awaiting you after the break.

Church of England ends ban on gay bishops

The room stand to applaud outgoing Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams as they pay farewell tributes to him during a meeting at the General Synod of the Church of England, at Church House in central London on Nov. 21, 2012.

By Reuters

The Church of England has lifted a ban on gay male clergy who live with their partners from becoming bishops on condition they pledge to stay celibate, threatening to reignite an issue that splits the 80-million-strong global Anglican community.

The issue of homosexuality has driven a rift between Western and African Anglicans since a Canadian diocese approved blessings for same-sex couples in 2002 and U.S. Anglicans in the Episcopal Church appointed an openly gay man as a bishop in 2003.

---

The Church of England, struggling to remain relevant in modern Britain despite falling numbers of believers, is already under pressure after voting narrowly last November to maintain a ban on women becoming bishops.

The church said the House of Bishops, one of its most senior bodies, had ended an 18-month moratorium on the appointment of gays in civil partnerships as bishops.

The decision was made in late December but received little attention until the church confirmed it on Friday.

Gay clergy in civil partnerships would be eligible for the episcopate - the position of bishop - if they make the pledge to remain celibate, as is already the case for gay deacons and priests.

"The House has confirmed that clergy in civil partnerships, and living in accordance with the teaching of the Church on human sexuality, can be considered as candidates for the episcopate," the Bishop of Norwich Graham James said.

Church of England votes against allowing women bishops

"The House believed it would be unjust to exclude from consideration for the episcopate anyone seeking to live fully in conformity with the Church's teaching on sexual ethics or other areas of personal life and discipline," he added in a statement on behalf of the House of Bishops.

The church teaches that couples can only have sex within marriage, and that marriage can only be between a man and a woman.

Conservative outcry
Britain legalized civil partnerships in 2005, forcing the church to consider how to treat clergy living in same-sex unions.

The church ruled that a civil partnership was not a bar to a clerical position, provided the clergy remained celibate, but failed to specifically address the issue of when the appointment was of a bishop.

In July 2011 the church launched a review to deal with this omission, at the same time imposing the moratorium on nominating gays in such partnerships as bishops while the study was conducted.

The review came a year after a gay cleric living in a civil partnership was reportedly blocked from becoming a bishop in south London.

It was the second setback for the cleric, Jeffrey John, who would already have become a bishop in 2003 but was forced to withdraw from the nomination after an outcry from church conservatives.

Rod Thomas, chairman of the conservative evangelical group Reform, said the church's move on gay bishops would provoke further dispute.

"It will be much more divisive than what we have seen over women bishops. If you thought that was a furor, wait to see what will happen the first time a bishop in a civil partnership is appointed," he told BBC television.

• Supporting individuals in varied stages of trauma related specifically to domestic violence.

?All women deserve to be in an emotionally stable and physically safe relationship,? Ms. Putnam said in an announcement. ?If you have ever felt that you have been in an emotional or physically harming relationship, you are not alone. We believe that through our group women can experience empowerment through the support of others who have gone through similar experiences.?

Safe Alliance domestic violence support groups are held every other Wednesday, beginning January 9, 2013 in a confidential location.

Safe Alliance supports victims of domestic and sexual violence, and child abuse and helps people build safe, healthy relationships. Updated tool now available to predict prostate cancer spread

Jan. 3, 2013 ? Prostate cancer experts at Johns Hopkins have developed an updated version of the Partin Tables, a tool to help men diagnosed with prostate cancer and their doctors to better assess their chance of a surgical cure. The updated tool, based on a study of more than 5,600 men treated at The Johns Hopkins Hospital from 2006 to 2011, is published in the Jan. 3 issue of the British Journal of Urology International.

"The first thing most men want to know when they learn they have prostate cancer is their prognosis -- ??whether it can be cured," says Alan W. Partin, M.D., Ph.D., professor and director of Urology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and creator of the Partin Tables. "The Partin Tables are a statistical model to show the probability that the cancer is confined to the prostate and therefore is likely to be cured with surgery," he says.

The model is based on a patient's prostate specific antigen (PSA) level, Gleason Score (a number from 2 to 10 that estimates the aggressiveness of tumors removed during a biopsy based on their appearance under a microscope), and clinical stage -- the extent to which a tumor can be felt during a digital exam.

Treatment decisions for prostate cancer are very complex and depend on a variety of factors, including whether the cancer is confined to the prostate or whether it has spread to the edge of the gland, seminal vesicles, lymph nodes or elsewhere in the body. Data for the Partin Tables, first published in 1993, have been based on the outcomes for more than 20,000 men who underwent prostate removal (known as radical prostatectomy) at Johns Hopkins over the past three decades. This represents the third update of the data.

"Twenty years ago, before widespread adoption of PSA for early detection, many men were diagnosed with prostate cancer after their cancer had spread. Today, the vast majority of men are diagnosed when the cancer is still confined to the prostate, giving them a much better chance of a cure with a surgical removal of the prostate," says Partin.

John B. Eifler, M.D., the lead author of the article who worked with Partin on the revision, says the new Partin Tables show that certain categories of men who were previously not thought to have a good prognosis actually could be cured with surgery. "We now have a better understanding of intermediate risk and see that more men now fall into that category, instead of the higher risk group," says Eifler.

For example, men with a biopsy Gleason Score of 8 and above previously were not thought to be good candidates for surgery because of the likelihood that the cancer had spread. The new data show a higher probability of a cure with surgery even if a man's Gleason score is 8. Scores of 9 and 10 are still considered high risk, indicating that the cancer likely has spread.

The researchers also found that having a PSA level of 10 and above was a better cut-off for predicting the spread of disease compared to lower levels.

"The updated Partin Tables will significantly improve the ability of physicians to counsel patients on the extent of their disease and help them make treatment decisions, such as whether surgery is warranted and, if so, whether lymph nodes also should be removed during surgery," Partin says. "If there is a high probability that the cancer has spread, treatment options include radiation, chemotherapy and hormonal therapy."

To access the updated Partin Tables, go to http://urology.jhu.edu/prostate/partintables.php. By inputting the PSA, the Gleason Score and the clinical stage results, and clicking on "find results," an individual can see the percentage chance that the cancer is confined to the prostate, has migrated to the edge of the gland, has invaded the seminal vesicles or has spread to the lymph nodes.

Byron Wien's Prediction On Gun Control - Business Insider

AP Images

A message is seen on a candle outside the St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, in Newtown, Conn.

Byron Wien, the legendary Wall Street strategist at Blackstone, just published his 28th annual list of Ten Surprises.

As usual, it combines predictions for the economy, markets, and the political environment among other things.

"Every year there are always a few Surprises that do not make the Ten because either I do not believe they are as relevant as those on the basic list or I am not comfortable with the idea that they are ?probable,?" notes Wien.

Here's one of those he left out:

"The Newtown, Connecticut, massacre finally convinces Congress to do something about gun control. As a first step they ban future civilian purchases of automatic weapons, including handguns, with clips of more than ten rounds and require more extensive background checks on all gun purchases. ?It should not be easier to buy a gun than rent a car? becomes a slogan."

We'd be bummed out if he didn't think it was relevant enough for the list.? We'd be even more bummed out if he didn't think passage of stronger gun control was "probable," or "having a better than 50% likelihood of happening."

In an interview with NBC's Meet The Press this past weekend, President Obama said that gun control reform would be a top priority:

"The question is: Are we going to be able to have a national conversation and move something through Congress? I'd like to get it done in the first year. I will put forward a very specific proposal based on the recommendations that Joe Biden's task force is putting together as we speak. And so this is not something that I will be putting off."

However, skeptics point to past high-profile shootings and massacres and note that little was done to push these reforms through back then.

What's causing us to believe that any significant reform would happen this time?
