Workers getting priced out of health benefits

Ninety percent of uninsured workers said they didn't have insurance because it was too costly.

By Allison Linn

The weak economy continues to have a harsh effect on workers? access to health insurance -- not necessarily because workers aren?t offered it but because they can?t afford it.

A new study from the Employment Benefit Research Institute finds that 55.8 percent of employees were getting health insurance directly from their employer as of April 2011, the most recent data available. That?s a nearly 5 percentage point drop from December 2007, when the economy first went into recession, and the researchers said early research shows that the number probably fell further.

The drop comes after more than a decade in which the rate of employees getting insurance in their own name held steady at around 60 percent.

It appears that it?s the cost, not the availability, of health insurance that is the primary thing keeping workers from getting insured.?Ninety percent of uninsured workers said they didn?t have insurance because it was too costly.

The study was based on government data on workers?age 18 to?64.

Paul Fronstin, director of EBRI?s health research and education program, said many employers have been gradually asking employees to foot more of the bill for their care through?higher deductibles and co-payments.

?Employers have changed their focus to managing cost by changing the quality of the coverage that?s being provided,? Fronstin said. ?You see more cost shifting and more employee responsibility when it comes to the cost of health care services.?

He said monthly premiums have not necessarily risen as much, but neither have wages. That may mean people feel like they are forking over a bigger slice of their paycheck for an insurance plan that requires higher and higher deductibles and other out-of-pocket expenses.

?It?s the value of the plan that?s changed more than the premium,? he said.

Some who drop their employer?s coverage may be switching to cheaper private plans or getting covered by a spouse, partner or parent. The percentage of workers who are covered as a dependent on someone else?s plan has held steady at around 17 percent.

Is pet insurance a necessity? How important is renter's insurance? Sorting through all of the different types of insurance can be a headache, but Wall Street Journal and Market Watch columnist Jeanette Pavini has a list of what you need and what you can ignore.

Others may just be giving up health insurance altogether.

As the job market becomes stronger, some employers might start offering better?health care benefits to?compete for key employees.

But Fronstin noted that because employers generally make decisions about health care coverage six months to a year in advance, any improvements will likely lag quite a bit.

The man who covertly lived at AOL

Eric Simons

Eric Simons - legitimately on the job with ClassConnect

By Bill Briggs

For two months late last year, entrepreneur Eric Simons toiled -- and squatted -- at the Palo Alto campus of America Online: eating, exercising, showering, laundering his clothes, and sleeping in dark nooks, all while trying to keep his life habits a secret.

Now, Simons, 20, is openly sharing the gritty details and offering an explanation that?s partly an apology, partly a tale of how an extreme innovator can blend in so easily with other Silicon Valley workaholics.

?I had no money, no place to go. My closest family was in Chicago. The only reason I stayed there was none of my friends had available couches,? Simons told msnbc.com Thurday.

He initially had full permission to be on the AOL property -- and even wore an access badge -- via his acceptance into Imagine K12, a for-profit incubator based at AOL?s campus. The outfit mentors and funds entrepreneurs with a passion for education. Simons and his business partners were given $20,000 by Imagine K12 to develop a startup company to help teachers. But when the incubation money ran dry, Simons decided to stay, move in, and complete his mission.

?I could have packed up and gone home but then I wouldn?t have been able to build a project, launch it and meet with investors,? he said. ?It was always going to be a short-time thing.?

While working each day on the idea that later became classconnect.com, ?Simons poached the snacks that AOL offers its employees -- mainly Ramen Noodles and Trail Mix. After leaving his desk, he would shower at an AOL gym (which offers shampoo and soap) and sometimes wash his clothes at a campus laundromat. Long after dark, he would curl up on one of several couches tucked into remote hallways.?

?The security guys would walk by and just assume I was working late -- which, technically, I was,? Simons said. ?They thought he's just working really hard (like a lot of people at AOL) and taking a nap before he goes back to work again.?

Because security guards changed shifts at midnight,? he said, his 24/7 presence wasn?t seen as strange. Simons still isn?t sure why -- as he slept at 6 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 19 -- an AOL security guard screamed, ?This isn?t a dorm!? and ordered him to leave the premises.? He did.? Immediately. He also was stripped of his access badge.

But Simons was allowed later to return to his desk. From that point on, he said, he only was denied access to the building?s third floor where the couches and snacks are kept. These days, he still goes to the Imagine K12 office for meetings.

A call to AOL?s corporate communications office seeking comment on Simons' secret stay was not returned before this article was posted.

But Simons' squatting paid off.

Eventually, he convinced a Silicon Valley venture capitalist to invest $50,000 in ClassConnect. The website serves as an online hub where teachers can share and find lesson-planning ideas.

?The reason I stayed there was entirely not by choice -- if I wanted to make this startup succeed,? Simons said.

The VC funding had one more benefit. Simons now rents a house in Palo Alto.?

A tip of the hat to CNET.com, which first reported on Simons' squatting stretch.

Russia To Establish Bases On the Moon

3 areas of concern as seen on the ISS

1) If you go full international everything will take 10 times as long and cost 10 times as much. That does NOT mean you should go isolationist. If the Americans want to drop a lab literally next door, thats OK, even if they want to share power and air thats OK. But you have to be firm about each item being owned and responsible by precisely one nation (or at most a very small group) and you cannot make the whole project or even subprojects depend on that one nation's work. If the Germans want to land a really cool telescope and click it into position next to the base like a lego block, fine. But if you need a full UN treaty to launch some oxygen tanks then you're completely F'd as those guys are utterly ineffective.

2) Permanent as in ongoing perpetual expansion like a stereotypical overseas military base, or permanent as in we've not decided when to abandon ship yet? The danger of not being in perpetual expansion mode is you'll probably end up like the ISS, in construction for 99% of its lifetime and the week after the last bolt is tightened, its time to deorbit and give up. Permanent as in we intend to expand or improve this base to the tune of $1B/yr in perpetuity is a pretty good idea. Project management with a defined yet nebulous end date after which its managerially abandonded is a great idea for making "a" disposable rocket engine. Its a terrible idea for an entire base, or a station, or even a vehicle program.

3) Please don't do the space shuttle and ISS thing of promising everything to everyone for free and instantly, and then scaling back until its a miserable failure compared to its original goals. So the ISS could hold 24 crew. OK, lets build everything to the assumption that the hotel labor load will be 2 people working full time, thats less than 10% of the crew changing air filters and gaskets or unclogging toilets or whatever the hotel load is on a station. Whoops we're imploding the crew size to 6, now a minimum of 1/3 of the on-orbit time is spent maintaining the station. Whoops. Suddenly a station where most of the people do scientific research turns into an aerospace version of "this old house". Whoops.

Northern Ontario medical school paying off for Dryden | Health X ...

We are pumped to share one of our favorite stories from Self here on FitSugar! Barre classes may make you easy on the eyes, but at $20 or more a pop, they?re definitely not easy on the wallet. Rather than take a second job to pay for our latest fitness addiction, we turned to Beverly Hill-based Cardio Barre instructor Stacey Bosworth to get the inside scoop on scoring a long, lean dancer?s body in your living room. ?This at-home workout is effective because it targets the whole lower body. Cardio Barre is amazing because it is a no-impact workout that allows you to lengthen and strengthen your muscles while burning fat. It will also help increase your flexibility and strength,? says Bosworth. Celebrity devotees, including Dakota Fanning , Neve Campbell, and Heather Morris, can all attest to the fact that Cardio Barre has given them ?a lifted tush and leaner, dancer-like legs!? Incorporate these three moves into your regular routine three times a week for maximum results. Butt Blaster Come down to the floor on both forearms with your knees bent. Your left hip is directly over your left knee. Your right leg is bent to a 90-degree angle with your foot flexed. Extend your right leg toward the ceiling as if you were pushing the ceiling away from you (see photo above). Bring your right leg down past your left hip and then back up toward the ceiling, keeping your leg parallel to the floor with your kneecap pointing toward the ground and your foot flexed. You are doing a full range of motion, trying to imagine extending your leg all the way through the ceiling. Keep reading for more barre moves you can do at home!

Terrain's Cadillac of Garden Stores Store Profile | Apartment Therapy

MP Icon.jpgTerrain, the garden and home store, has had one brick and mortar presence, in Glenn Mills, Pennsylvania, since 2009. Now, the brand has added a second location in Westport, Connecticut. In a space that once housed a Cadillac dealership, Terrain has opened a lush garden center and restaurant.

As a part of URBN brands, the folks behind Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie, you would expect that Terrain's new Westport store to be well designed, with a reclaimed/industrial edge. And that's exactly what we get. The former Cadillac dealership provides a perfect backdrop for that industrial-gardening fusion. The floor to ceiling windows and concrete walls, though originally used for a more industrial setting, have a greenhouse appearance in this new incarnation.

In addition to gardening supplies, like Australian tree ferns, Black Mondo grass, and fig trees, some previously unavailable on the retail market, Terrain also stocks vintage and handcrafted furniture.

For more about Terrain, visit their store page over at Marketplace.
