New Study Finds Labels on Vitamin D Supplements Often Wrong

In a research letter published on Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association-Internal Medicine, scientists noted that they found that vitamin D pills that they prescribed during their studies often did not have the potency that the manufacturers had claimed. They also noted that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not regulate vitamins and other supplements, so "potency may not be well evaluated."

The researchers had become curious after testing vitamin D supplements that were being given to women participating in a study regarding the supplements' efficacy when used during menopause. The amount of variance in the prescribed pills, according to their research letter, led them to begin testing over-the-counter varieties as well.

Here is some of the key information that was released on Monday regarding this study into vitamin D supplements.

* Overall, researchers say that they discovered that only one-third of the pills that they were giving to women in their initial trial met U.S. standards for potency.

* U.S. standards are determined by the the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention, and state that compounded pills, such as the ones that were being used in the initial trial, must contain between 90 percent and 110 percent of the active ingredient listed on the label.

* Dr. Erin LeBlanc , who is one of the authors of the study and an endocrinologist at the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research in Portland, Ore., told the media on Monday that her team found that "the potency of these vitamin D supplements varied widely," as quoted by USA Today.

* The amount of actual vitamin D in any one of the supplements that the team tested ended up being between 9 percent and 140 percent of the actual amount listed on the packaging.

* When five pills were tested and the results averaged together, the results often were closer to being 100 percent of the promised dosage, but individual pills may contain too much or too little of the supplement to be effective.

* LeBlanc and her team found that even the pills that they were using in their initial trial, which were prescription strength and had been compounded, often contained between 52 percent and 146 percent of the vitamin D promised on the packaging.

* The concern, according to the team, is that those taking over-the-counter vitamin D supplements to treat a known deficiency may not get enough of it to actually help if the pills do not contain the amount of the supplement that is claimed on the labels.

* LeBlanc noted herself on Monday that if people with a known deficiency "are consistently taking a supplement with little vitamin D in it, they could face health risks," as quoted by MyHealthNewsDaily.

Petrochemicals - Brazil, Mexico - Braskem freezes green plastics plans, focuses elsewhere

Brazilian petrochemical company Braskem (NYSE: BAK) said it does not plan to invest in 2013 in new plants that use ethanol from sugarcane to produce polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene (PE).

Braskem currently operates a 'green' PE plant in Triunfo in southern Brazil, with capacity of 200,000t/y, which began production in 2010.

Since then, the company has said it planned to build a bio-based PP plant with capacity of at least 30,000t/y, with an investment of at least US$100mn, as well as another PE plant.

At a press conference, Braskem chief executive officer Carlos Fadigas said that the company will not consider investments in bioplastics this year.

Dow Chemical (NYSE: DOW) and Mitsui have also delayed their US$1.5bn project to produce PE from sugarcane in Brazil. In the project, ethanol would be produced from sugarcane and then used to produce 350,000t/y of various grades of PE. The project would have been the world's largest biopolymers investment.

Braskem has been under pressure from credit ratings agencies to cut its leverage and increase cash generation.

In addition, the economics of bioplastics production of PP and PE has come into question because of the availability of cheap shale gas feedstock in the US.

Fadigas said that the company's main focus for investment was the US$3.2bn Ethlyene XXI PE project in Mexico, a joint venture with Idesa of Mexico.

Construction of this facility, which will start production in 2015, is now 20% complete.

Braskem is also continuing to analyze its potential investment in the Comperj petrochemical complex that national oil company Petrobras (NYSE: PBR) is constructing in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

A final investment decision is due to be taken in 2014, Fadigas said, and will depend partly on the cost of feedstock from Petrobras and on tax incentives from the federal government.

Fantasy Baseball Rankings 2013: Power Ranking Best Outfielders

While there are a ton of quality outfielders to choose from for fantasy baseball there is still a clear pecking order at the top.?

While it is always important to maintain balance with speed and power in a lineup, when it comes to picking your first outfielder, that's the time to take the best on the board and go from there.?

So, when selecting your first outfielder, try to land one of the following five:

?

No. 5: Matt Kemp, Dodgers?

Matt Kemp brings it all to the table. He gets on base, hits for power, steals bases and produces runs. Well, at least he used to do it all.

Kemp led all fantasy players in points in 2011, and he was primed to pull off the feat again last year, then he was derailed by a nasty hamstring injury. The injury kept him out of 51 games.

So, in a season after he stole 40 bases, he swiped just nine last year.

At 28 years old, Kemp's days of stealing 30-plus bases may be over. Also, there is the concern that Kemp will again be forced to miss significant time with an injury.?

?

No. 4: Carlos Gonzalez, Rockies

Like Matt Kemp, Carlos Gonzalez was undone by injuries last season. In fact, this 27-year-old has been undone by injuries the past two seasons.?

Still, despite playing in just 135 games last year, Gonzalez hit .303 with 22 home runs and 85 RBI.?

When Gonzalez can play he produces in a big way. It is simply a matter of keeping him on the field. The good news on this front is that his injuries have been minor. There isn't anything to suggest that there is a chronic problem brewing.?

While it would be foolish to expect him to play in 162 games next season, somewhere in the neighborhood of 140 is a solid expectation.?

?

No. 3: Andrew McCutchen?

Andrew McCutchen, already in the midst of an impressive career, took his game to the next level last season. As a result, he finished fourth in fantasy points for 2012.

There is no reason to think that McCutchen will do anything but improve on those numbers this season. McCutchen is 26 years old, and he has been on a steady climb of improvement over his four seasons in the majors.?

McCutchen has improved his WAR by over a point in each of his pro seasons.?

This is a player that is going to bring your lineup a little of everything, and do so at a high level.?

?

No. 2: Ryan Braun

Ryan Braun entered 2012 with more question marks than the typical reigning MVP as he was followed by the PED controversy that surfaced after he won the MVP.?

His numbers, across the board, were comparable to his MVP season, and that was despite losing Prince Fielder to protect him in the lineup.?

Braun is a well-rounded and consistent player. He has also been able to avoid serious injuries. In all but his rookie season, Braun has played in at least 150 games.?

Braun is one of the safest fantasy picks you can find.?

?

No. 1: Mike Trout

Rookie phenom Mike Trout is back for his second season and there is no reason to expect anything other than another stellar season.?

In his rookie campaign, he?hit .326/.399/.564 with 30 home runs, 49 stolen bases, 129 runs and 83 RBI in just 139 games.?

While it would be foolish to expect this kind of success from any player, Trout is just 21 years old, and he should still be making adjustments to the majors, which will lead to even more success.?

Even if Trout does suffer some regression, he would still have outstanding numbers. If you have a chance to draft Trout, jump at the opportunity.?

Nathan Sharpe joins Fox Sports

Expert opinion ... Sharpe brings a wealth of rugby experience to the Fox Sports team. Source: AP

The Wallabies most-capped forward and two-time John Eales Medallist Nathan Sharpe has swapped his boots for the microphone and will begin his post-rugby career in Fox Sports?s new rugby show, Rugby HQ.

Sharpe joins the country?s most recognised commentary team, headed by the game?s number one caller Greg Clark and Wallabies greats Phil Kearns and Tim Horan.

He?ll also work alongside the likes of Rod Kafer, Brendan Cannon and Greg Martin.

Sharpe will make his first on-air appearance on the brand new rugby show, Rugby HQ, which replaces The Rugby Club at the 8.30pm (EDT) timeslot on Thursday nights.

Rugby HQ will premiere at 8.30pm AEDT this Thursday night (February 14) on Fox Sports 2HD & Fox Sports 2, where Sharpe will be joined by Martin and host Nick McArdle to preview the Super Rugby season for each of the Aussie teams and look ahead to Friday night?s opener between Melbourne Rebels and Western Force.

"Rugby is a genuine love for me, so I hope to carry that into my job with FOX SPORTS and add a different perspective to what is already a really well established and excellent commentary team," Sharpe said.

"I?ve been lucky enough to play with a lot of the current crop of players, so I?m going to try to bring some insight into what the individual players and teams are trying to achieve.

"I feel I can bring a unique perspective in that regard, having only retired from international rugby a couple of months ago."

Sharpe?s duties will include regular appearances as a panellist on Rugby HQ, plus sideline commentary work and behind-the-scenes reporting on match day throughout the Super Rugby and international seasons, including the British & Irish Lions Tour and The Rugby Championship.
