BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian warplanes pounded a strategic northern city with three airstrikes Tuesday as ground troops pushed forward to recapture the area recently taken by rebels, activists said.

The fighting over Maaret al-Numan, which sits along the main highway that connects Aleppo and Damascus, comes as the regime intensifies efforts to retake the area that was seized by rebels earlier this month.

Their presence has disrupted the regime's ability to send supplies and reinforcements to Aleppo, where regime forces are bogged down in a bloody fight for control of the country's largest city.

Syrian troops have been fighting against rebels in Aleppo since July and rebel advances over the past week have added urgency to the battle.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said four people, including three young girls, were killed in the air raids on Maaret al-Numan.

Another activist group, the Local Coordination Committees put the death toll from the airstrikes and ground fire at 19. Discrepancies in casualty tolls are frequent because of restrictions on independent reporting and the chaos on the ground.

The LCC and the Observatory reported air raids on several suburbs of Damascus including the restive areas of Arbeen, Zamalka and Douma.

Tuesday's airstrikes came a day after activists reported the most widespread bombing in a single day since Syria's 19-month crisis began. Maaret al-Numan was among the hardest hit on Monday as well.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, who heads the Observatory, said ground troops were fighting rebels on the southern edge of the city, 80 kilometers (50 miles) southwest of Aleppo.

"The regime wants to recapture Maaret al-Numan because it links Damascus with Aleppo," Abdul-Rahman said referring to Syria's two largest cities. "It is a very strategic city."

Anti-regime activist say more than 35,000 people have been killed since the uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime started in March 2011.

In Damascus, meanwhile, Syrian troops and rebels clashed in the Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmouk, activists said. The LCC and the Observatory said the fighting broke out after midnight, but they had no word on casualties.

Palestinian refugees in Syria tried to stay on the sidelines when the uprising began. But many Palestinian youths have joined the fight as they became enraged by mounting violence and moved by Arab Spring calls for greater freedoms.

Gasoline prices fell Wednesday as travel in the storm-battered Northeast remained restricted by felled trees, power outages and flood damage.

The national price for a gallon of gasoline fell 1.3 cents overnight to $3.521 per gallon, according to AAA, Wright Express and the Oil Price Information Service. That's about 26 cents less than a month ago.

Prices fell less than a penny in New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. They rose less than a penny in New Jersey.

The drop in demand for gas has overshadowed limited production at the nine refineries in the region. Seven refineries have been operating at reduced rates and the other two closed. Crews worked to restore the facilities to normal operation but, in some cases, were hampered by power outages.

Although gasoline supplies are plentiful in the region, some supply terminals were closed, which limited availability for service stations. And some stations were closed because of a lack of power.

Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at OPIS, predicted the average nationwide price of gasoline will fall below $3.50 per gallon in the next couple of weeks, with the steepest declines in the Southeast and on the West Coast. Prices could remain flat or increase temporarily in the Northeast until there is a better idea of when supplies will be readily available again, he said.

"The product is available and I don't anticipate prolonged supply shortages," he said in an email. "There is gasoline in various tanks, but thanks to flooding or electricity or traffic chaos, it can't be accessed."

Benchmark crude rose 39 cents to $86.07 per barrel in New York. Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, fell 22 cents to $108.86 per barrel in London.

In other trading:

Opsins, the light-sensitive proteins key to vision, may have evolved earlier and undergone fewer genetic changes than previously believed, according to a new study from the National University of Ireland Maynooth and the University of Bristol published October 29 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) .

The study, which used computer modelling to provide a detailed picture of how and when opsins evolved, sheds light on the origin of sight in animals, including humans. The evolutionary origins of vision remain hotly debated, partly due to inconsistent reports of phylogenetic relationships among the earliest opsin-possessing animals.

Dr Davide Pisani of Bristol's School of Earth Sciences and colleagues at NUI Maynooth performed a computational analysis to test every hypothesis of opsin evolution proposed to date. The analysis incorporated all available genomic information from all relevant animal lineages, including a newly sequenced group of sponges (Oscarella carmela) and the Cnidarians, a group of animals thought to have possessed the world's earliest eyes.

Using this information, the researchers developed a timeline with an opsin ancestor common to all groups appearing some 700 million years ago. This opsin was considered 'blind' yet underwent key genetic changes over the span of 11 million years that conveyed the ability to detect light.

Dr Pisani said: "The great relevance of our study is that we traced the earliest origin of vision and we found that it originated only once in animals. This is an astonishing discovery because it implies that our study uncovered, in consequence, how and when vision evolved in humans."

Two Big Commodity Themes You Should Think About

When entering the world of commodities investing, there are many things to consider. Not only are there many different commodities to choose from, but other factors such as deciding allocations and ensuring adequate liquidity must be dealt with as well. But before beginning that process, you must first have a concrete understanding of why it is you plan to enter the world of commodities. Additionally, you should have a clear understanding of those conditions that will cause you to reverse course and exit your positions. While inflation protection is often used as a reason for investing in commodities, I see two overarching themes that drive investors? desires to have portfolio exposure to commodities: future global supply/demand imbalances and currency debasement.

Prior to the 2008/2009 financial crisis, the story of global growth (specifically emerging markets growth) creating worldwide supply and demand imbalances in various commodities was at the helm of the commodities super-cycle. Then, as central banks and governments around the world ramped up the electronic printing presses and the deficit spending, the overarching theme seemed to change to that of protecting against currency debasement. This was especially true in oil (USO), gold (GLD, IAU), and silver (SLV).

If you are a commodities investor who supports the idea that global growth will create supply and demand imbalances in the near future, you need to be aware of the fact that in recent years, many investors who have moved money into commodities are simply there because they want to protect against currency debasement. Therefore, if you are investing in, say, oil, using traditional fundamentals as your guide, you may be overlooking the difficult to quantify premium that oil receives due to quantitative easing. If global growth does pick up one day by enough to allow the Fed to stop its unconventional monetary policy, that does not necessarily portend significantly higher oil prices.? After all, there are plenty of investors who have gotten long oil to protect against currency debasement that may decide to leave commodities in favor of assets they historically invested in, such as stocks.

Likewise, if you are a silver investor attempting to protect against currency debasement by getting long the precious metal, you may be overlooking silver?s potential to sell off violently in the case of a worldwide recession. While unconventional monetary policy certainly helps the price of silver, it is very difficult to say with certainty to what degree the price of silver could ignore a global downturn.

Each commodity investor is likely to have an element of both future supply/demand imbalances and currency debasement as a part of his or her investing thesis. Before choosing the commodities in which to invest, think through the effects that each of the two dominating investment themes currently has on every commodity you are considering for investment.? Moreover, think through how the future prices of those commodities may be impacted by a change in the relative importance of each of the themes.

For example, if currency debasement becomes less of a concern in the future at a time when global growth is ramping up, what will this do to the prices of various commodities?? It is also necessary to think through a scenario in which currency debasement becomes less of a concern at the same time that global growth slows or stagnates. Likewise, what if global growth accelerates and central banks don?t take their foot off the gas, continuing ahead with unconventional monetary policy?? Under that scenario, certain commodities will likely be more favored than others.

Before allocating any money to commodities, you should think through the types of scenarios outlined in the previous paragraph. That exercise will be helpful when deciding which commodities best fit today?s investing environment as well as when crafting your exit plan.

We have been planning for over a month now to redo the stairs. I?ve searched for ideas, bought the supplies, and scheduled no less than 3 work days. It seemed like a fairly simple process ? pull up the carpet, paint the stairs, choose a decorating scheme.

Then, life happened.

At first, we had trouble finding a free weekend. There was volleyball, soccer, Girl Scouts, and school activities. Once we made it through the sports? seasons, we had a little more time on our hands. I thought for sure we?d be able to tackle the project in just a few hours. Yeah, I?m hilarious.

On our first planned work weekend, the tween was diagnosed with scarlet fever (no, seriously) so the weekend was spent hauling her to the doctor, then the urgent care center, and then to the pharmacy. We spent the rest of the weekend nursing her back to health and keeping the children separated.

I can?t even remember what happened the next weekend, but I know the work day disappeared before I even knew it. Finally, I just started ripping out the carpet. I thought I could at least see what it would take to make it happen. The next thing I knew, I had ripped all the carpet out and was pretty much locked into the project.

I removed nails, pulled up carpet tack, and scraped old drywall mud. When the hubby arrived home and saw what I was doing, he didn?t even roll his eyes before pitching in and finishing the job. The stairs are clear ? and I already love it so much more than the old, ratty carpet.

That was when I realized the stairs needed a little trim work before they could be finished. There were a few gaps here and there, due to the builders not taking the time to finish them properly. After all, they probably never imagined an insane woman ripping out the carpet one random Saturday night.

By that point, Home Depot was closed so our project was on hold. And Sunday was already booked. The rest of the week was fall break, with family fun activities and kids underfoot all day. Today was supposed to be another work day, but I hadn?t considered the evening?s plans with this idea. The girls are having friends spend the night, which makes dealing with wet paint a little difficult.

Okay, so tomorrow, right? Except by the time all our visitors are home, we still have the problem of finishing the job and getting the paint dried before the girls need to go up stairs for bed. And, this is a problem every weekend ? the girls are around, the pets are in the way. How do we paint stairs in a busy house?

I think we?ll have to get started early one morning, right after the girls are at school. Even if the stairs are not dried before they get home, at least we?ll have a few more hours to bedtime. Now, who wants to keep 2 cats and a dog while we paint?

Breast cancer cells enticed to spread by 'tumorous environment' as well as genetic changes

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? A new study from Johns Hopkins researchers suggests that the lethal spread of breast cancer is as dependent on a tumor's protein-rich environment as on genetic changes inside tumor cells.

In a report in the Sept. 25 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the scientists conclude that a molecular signal in the protein meshwork surrounding the breast cancer cells may provide the critical trigger to initiate the life-threatening process of metastasis to distant sites in the body.

Moreover, their experiments suggest that the environment surrounding a tumor can even coax healthy breast cells to invade surrounding tissue just as cancer cells do, and that a healthy environment can cause cancer cells to stay put and not spread as they usually do.

"The most dangerous aspect of breast cancer is its ability to spread to distant sites, and most tumors are initially unable to do that," says Andrew Ewald, Ph.D., assistant professor of cell biology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and member of the Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences' Center for Cell Dynamics. Learning more specifically what triggers metastases may provide additional targets for preventing and treating the malignant process that causes cancer deaths, Ewald adds.

It's widely accepted that cancers acquire the ability to spread through the gradual accumulation of genetic changes, and experiments have also shown that these changes occur in parallel with changes in the protein content and 3-dimensional patterning of the protein meshwork that creates their immediate surroundings. What has been unclear is whether those immediate surroundings play a role in initiating and encouraging cancer's spread, or whether they are more "effect" then "cause."

To sort out the contributions of both the genetic changes and the environment, Ewald's team separated tumor cells from their surroundings by taking fragments of human breast tumors and embedding them in two different commercially available 3-D gels, one that mimics the protein meshwork surrounding healthy mammary tissue and another that mimics tumorous mammary tissue.

The gels are tools often used to study tumor invasiveness. The first was made of proteins that normally create a thin layer around healthy breast tissue, acting as a molecular boundary for it. The second was made entirely of a protein, collagen I, which is found in unusually high concentrations around breast tumors.

If cancer cells are driven to disperse solely because of the genetic changes they carry, the researchers expected to see the tumor fragments behave similarly in both the healthy and tumorous environments. What they saw instead, says Ewald, was a distinct difference. As expected, 88 percent of tumor fragments sent cells crawling into the tumorous meshwork environment, the first step in metastasis known as dissemination. But only 15 percent of tumor fragments sent cells crawling into the normal environment. According to Ewald, these results indicate that the environment around a tumor plays a more direct role in cancer spread than previously thought.

If indeed cells can be enticed outward by the protein environment, the researchers reasoned, that environment might even be powerful enough to coax cells away from healthy breast tissue. To test this idea, they took fragments of both healthy and cancerous mouse mammary glands and placed them in the collagen I gels mimicking a tumor's environment. Results show that in the tumorous environment, nearly as many of the healthy fragments sent cells dispersing as did the tumorous fragments. One notable difference shown in their time-lapse videos was that healthy cells only exited the normal tissue fragments for a short period of time, while cancer cells continued to exit the tumor fragments throughout the whole test period.

To learn why healthy cells stopped exiting normal tissue fragments sooner, the researchers analyzed the proteins on the cells that were in direct contact with the meshwork gels. In breast tissue, a thin protein layer normally forms a boundary between cells and their environment. When both healthy and tumorous tissue fragments were surgically removed prior to the experiments, this boundary was disrupted, allowing breast cells to directly contact the protein meshwork beyond the boundary. In healthy mammary gland fragments, the team found that the "self-corrective behavior" coincided with the re-creation of this protein boundary.

"This tells us that tumors continue to listen to their environments," Ewald says. "Our data suggest that tumors with genetic changes that favor cancer spread may not disperse until they are within a permissive environment." A dispersal-permissive environment is enough to provoke invasive behavior in all mammary tissue, healthy and cancerous, Ewald explains, and the difference between the two can be a single genetic change that allows the dispersal to continue unchecked.

Other authors of the report include Kim-Vy Nguyen-Ngoc, Kevin Cheung, Eliah Shamir and Ryan Gray from The Johns Hopkins University; Audrey Brenot and Zena Werb from the University of California, San Francisco; and William Hines and Paul Yaswen from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Exclusive: U.S. LNG group to launch campaign for natgas exports

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Backers of liquefied natural gas will launch the first major campaign on Monday to press lawmakers to allow the sale of more U.S. gas abroad, as the industry push for exports intensifies.

The effort by the Center for Liquefied Natural Gas will include a new web site and outreach aimed at policymakers and the public, making the case that selling the nation's surplus natural gas to foreign countries will yield significant economic benefits and not drastically raise prices.

"There is a lot of stranded investment waiting to be unleashed in these projects that would pour billions of dollars into local and national economies, if the regulatory process would be freed up and allowed to move forward," Bill Cooper, the head of the LNG trade group, told Reuters.

President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger for the presidency, Mitt Romney, have both lauded the boom in U.S. shale oil and gas production as a critical component of moving the country toward "energy independence."

But, the winner of the November 6 election will have to contend with concerns about how to manage this newfound energy wealth.

While federal law allows exports of natural gas, the Energy Department has to determine whether expanded exports are in the national interest. Only one export terminal has been approved but decisions on about 10 applications have been delayed till a review on the implications of exports is completed.

Critics have argued the nation's vast gas reserves offer a strategic advantage that should be used to bolster U.S. industry, and exporting gas will hurt manufacturers currently experiencing a resurgence due to cheap energy costs.

While the initiative is not directed at influencing the election campaign, the LNG group hopes it will help to combat calls to limit exports and will speed up the stalled permitting process.

"The markets will react faster and impose limitations upon exports more efficiently than a regulator ever could," Cooper said.

Gas drillers contend that the current low natural gas prices are not sustainable and U.S. gas output will curtailed without exports, as production outpaces demand.

While some lawmakers have weighed in on the debate on gas exports, the issue has not necessarily risen to prominence on the campaign trail or in Congress yet, with only one hearing on the topic so far.

Initially, some in Congress seemed reluctant to take a strong position on a matter pitting manufacturers against the oil and gas industry.

DE FACTO MORATORIUM?

Natural gas exports to all but a handful of countries with free trade agreements with the United States require approval from the Energy Department.

After allowing gas exports from one project, Cheniere's Sabine Pass terminal, the Obama administration has put off approving any more applications pending the outcome of an economic analysis.

That study, commissioned by the administration to evaluate the potential effects of LNG exports, has been delayed repeatedly and is now expected to be released by the end of the year.

Cooper said the department's delays amount to a de facto moratorium on exports. He said he hopes the new initiative will push the department to issue the study and to move forward on export applications.

Cyberbullying only rarely the sole factor identified in teen suicides

ScienceDaily (Oct. 20, 2012) ? Cyberbullying -- the use of the Internet, phones or other technologies to repeatedly harass or mistreat peers -- is often linked with teen suicide in media reports. However, new research presented on Oct. 20, at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans, shows that the reality is more complex. Most teen suicide victims are bullied both online and in school, and many suicide victims also suffer from depression.

For the abstract, "Cyberbullying and Suicide: A Retrospective Analysis of 41 Cases," researchers searched the Internet for reports of youth suicides where cyberbullying was a reported factor. Information about demographics and the event itself were then collected through searches of online news media and social networks. Finally, descriptive statistics were used to assess the rate of pre-existing mental illness, the co-occurrence of other forms of bullying, and the characteristics of the electronic media associated with each suicide case.

The study identified 41 suicide cases (24 female, 17 male, ages 13 to 18) from the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. In the study, 24 percent of teens were the victims of homophobic bullying, including the 12 percent of teens identified as homosexual and another 12 percent of teens who were identified as heterosexual or of unknown sexual preference.

Suicides most frequently occurred in September (15 percent) and January (12 percent) although these higher rates may have occurred by chance. The incidence of reported suicide cases increased over time, with 56 percent occurring from 2003 to 2010, compared to 44 percent from January 2011 through April 2012.

Seventy-eight percent of adolescents who committed suicide were bullied both at school and online, and only 17 percent were targeted online only. A mood disorder was reported in 32 percent of the teens, and depression symptoms in an additional 15 percent.

"Cyberbullying is a factor in some suicides, but almost always there are other factors such as mental illness or face-to-face bullying," said study author John C. LeBlanc, MD, MSc, FRCPC, FAAP. "Cyberbullying usually occurs in the context of regular bullying."

Cyberbullying occurred through various media, with Formspring and Facebook specifically mentioned in 21 cases. Text or video messaging was noted in 14 cases.

"Certain social media, by virtue of allowing anonymity, may encourage cyberbullying," said Dr. LeBlanc. "It is difficult to prove a cause and effect relationship, but I believe there is little justification for anonymity."
