NEW YORK (AP) ? The price of oil is falling again on reports that the U.S. economy isn't growing as expected.

Benchmark U.S. crude lost $1.28 to $86.54 per barrel while Brent crude lost $1.13 to $102.34 per barrel. Oil is now the cheapest it's been all year.

Prices have been falling due to a variety of factors. On Thursday, the U.S. reported that the economy grew by 1.9 percent in the first quarter, slower than first estimated. The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits also rose last week to a five-week high.

Tensions also are easing over Iran's nuclear program, reducing chances for a conflict in the Persian Gulf. And China's manufacturing sector is slowing down while Europe's banking crisis threatens to plunge the region into recession.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A woman who saw two men harassing San Francisco Giants fans before a brutal beating in a Dodger Stadium parking lot testified Thursday about the volatile atmosphere after the 2011 opening day game.

Anna Maria Davila told a judge about encountering two men who matched the descriptions of defendants charged in the attack on Santa Cruz paramedic Bryan Stow.

Davila said one of the men was taunting Giants fans and punched a teenage boy who backed off.

She described a generally troubling atmosphere.

"I was annoyed by their behavior," she said. "There were a lot of fans coming by, and there were a lot of slurs being said (about) the Giants, a lot of profanity."

Moments after the first encounter, Davila said one of the men told her, "'that's how we do it.'"

Then, she said, the men turned their attention to a group of four Giants fans in their 30s. She didn't see a confrontation but said the men came running back a few minutes later, jumped into a car and shouted at a woman at the wheel, "'Drive, Drive!'" and they took off.

However, she could not positively identify defendants Louie Sanchez and Marvin Norwood. Both have pleaded not guilty. A judge will decide after the hearing if there is enough evidence to send them to trial in the Stow beating.

The case is fraught with undercurrents for the city where Dodger Stadium has long been a baseball landmark. The beating prompted public outrage and led to increased security at Dodgers games.

Lawyers for Sanchez and Norwood have suggested they might have been involved in other altercations that day but not the attack of Stow.

Trump overshadows Romney with 'birther' talk

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Mitt Romney's presidential campaign collided with Donald Trump's "birther" rhetoric on Tuesday as the reality television star hosted a fundraiser for the Republican while claiming again that President Barack Obama is foreign-born.

The debunked conspiracy theory among conservative activists dubbed "birthers" charges that Obama is not constitutionally qualified to serve in the White House. Romney has said he believes Obama was born in America, but he has not condemned Trump's comments.

Democrats contend it's the latest example of Romney's reluctance to confront the more extreme elements in his party.

"A lot of people do not think it was an authentic certificate," Trump told CNN of Obama's birth certificate, just hours before he was set to host Romney's finance event at the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas.

Such allegations have been repeatedly proven false. The state of Hawaii recently re-affirmed that Obama was born there.

Trump's comments, repeated in several media interviews Tuesday, overshadowed Romney's visit to Nevada, one of a handful of swing states expected to decide the presidential contest in November. Trump also upstaged news from Texas that Romney had collected enough delegates to clinch the Republican presidential nomination.

Romney did not address the issue directly at separate events in Colorado and Nevada, but on Monday night he told reporters aboard his campaign plane that Trump is entitled to his opinion. Even as Trump-related criticism from Democrats and Republicans intensified in recent days, Romney showed no sign of distancing himself from the polarizing figure.

"I don't agree with all the people who support me. And my guess is they don't all agree with everything I believe in," Romney said. "But I need to get 50.1 percent or more. And I'm appreciative to have the help of a lot of good people."

The birth question wasn't brought up at the Las Vegas fundraiser, and Romney spoke highly of Trump's efforts on his behalf.

"Mr. Trump, thank you for letting us come to this beautiful hotel and being with so many friends," Romney said. "Thank you for twisting the arms that it takes to bring a fundraiser together. I appreciate your help."

Trump remains popular among the conservative base and boasts ties to deep-pocketed donors. The Las Vegas event was expected to raise $2 million, but Romney's ties to Trump extend beyond that single fundraiser. He has recorded automated phone calls for Romney, hosted a fundraiser for his wife, Ann, in New York, and pressed the candidate's case as a television surrogate.

When Romney's campaign plan arrived at the Las Vegas airport Tuesday, it parked within sight of Trump's plane ? the businessman's name emblazoned on the side in large gold letters.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, once a rival for the GOP nomination and now a Romney supporter, suggested that the Trump issue will not derail Romney's campaign.

"Gov. Romney's not distracted. The Republican Party's not distracted," said Gingrich, who attended the Trump fundraiser. "We believe that this is an American-born job-killing president. Other people may believe that he was born somewhere else and still kills jobs."

The Obama campaign released a video Tuesday criticizing what it considers Romney's unwillingness to stand up to Trump and the more extreme elements in his party. There have been other examples in recent weeks that underscore Romney's delicate push to win over skeptical conservatives while appealing to moderates and independents who generally deliver general election victories.

"Mitt Romney's continued embrace of Donald Trump and refusal to condemn his disgraceful conspiracy theories demonstrates his complete lack of moral leadership," Obama's deputy campaign manager, Stephanie Cutter, said in a statement. "If Mitt Romney lacks the backbone to stand up to a charlatan like Donald Trump because he's so concerned about lining his campaign's pockets, what does that say about the kind of president he would be?"

While Trump asserts that the matter of Obama's birth is a "good issue" for Romney, conservative commentator George Will questioned the "cost benefit" of Romney appearing with Trump.

"The cost of appearing with this bloviating ignoramus is obvious, it seems to me," Will said Sunday. "Donald Trump is redundant evidence that if your net worth is high enough, your IQ can be very low and you can still intrude into American politics. ... Again, I don't understand the benefit. What is Romney seeking?"

Trump revived the false claims about Obama's birthplace late last week, citing a story about a literary agency that mistakenly listed that Obama was born in Kenya.

While Romney briefly addressed the issue Monday, senior aide Eric Fehrnstrom declined to condemn Trump's remarks in a recent interview.

"I can't speak for Donald Trump ... but I can tell you that Mitt Romney accepts that President Obama was born in the United States," Fehrnstrom said. "He doesn't view the place of his birth as an issue in this campaign."

But over the past three years, we have lost more than $300,000 a year, largely because of the downturn in the housing market. I?ve used my equity and retirement savings to keep going. As a result, 80 percent of my net worth is gone. Meanwhile, the bank is threatening to close my line of credit. My CPA thinks we will be OK if we can just hang in for two more years, but if I don?t secure new financing, we won?t make it. I love this work, but I am struggling to see the future. Do I keep going? The economy is improving, but maybe not fast enough. What would you suggest?

He has more land and more trees than he will need even if the housing market recovers completely. I suggested that he run a sale on trees to reduce his inventory and consider selling half his land. He could then use the proceeds of both sales?land and trees?to pay off his debt. His operating costs would be lower after downsizing, and his breakeven point would drop accordingly. ?If your goal is to stay in business because you love it,? I said, ?you?ll be better off cutting back now than floundering for two or three more years, hoping sales will improve. That will do more than eat at your equity. It will eat at your heart.? Washington women advance two boats to Grand Finals | NCAA Crew

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. ? Washington placed two boats in the Grand Finals of the NCAA Championships on Saturday, a significant achievement for the program as it seeks a return to national prominence.

The Huskies secured entries for the varsity eight and the varsity four at Saturday's semifinals on Lake Mercer's 2,000-meter course.

It is the first time since 2008 the varsity eight has reached the Grand Final of the NCAAs. The boat advanced out of a brutal semifinal grouping, which saw the Huskies paired with Michigan, Princeton, UCLA, Yale and Ohio State. Only the top three boats move on and the message UW coach Bob Ernst delivered before the race reflected its importance: Sunday matters little if you don't race at your best today.

"The game now is to get on the podium," Ernst said. "We'll see what everyone brings (on Sunday). I'm looking forward to it."

At the start of the V8 race, few teams could match the Wolverines' punishing pace. But the Huskies remained in contact with Michigan, as well as second-place Princeton. Those positions held firm until the 1,250-meter mark as the Huskies began to take seats from the Tigers, while managing to push away from UCLA. Ohio State, which won its heat on Friday, was faltering in fifth. With 250 meters to go, the Huskies thwarted a late move by the Bruins and crossed the line third overall, finishing in 6 minutes, 18.30 seconds.

Joining the Huskies in the Grand Final will be Michigan, Princeton, Virginia, California and USC. Making the Grand Final with the flagship boat was considered a critical goal coming into the race.

While the varsity's eight spot was relatively secure, the same couldn't be said for the varsity four.

Washington's time of 7:11.25 was shade in front of Harvard's (7:12.16) for the last spot in the Grand Finals.

"It's a character check. How deep are you willing to go, and how much (pain) can you tolerate?" Ernst said. "It's important to the program to see results like that."

UN Security Council condemns Syria massacre

Syria blamed terrorists for the Sunday massacre of more than 100 people, including children. Washington isn't buying it. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Updated at?6:01 p.m. ET -- The U.N. Security Council on Sunday unanimously condemned the Syrian government for heavy-weapons attacks on the town of Houla, the site of a massacre of at least 108 people, including many children, the council president said.

"The Security Council condemned in the strongest possible terms the killings, confirmed by United Nations observers, of dozens of men, women and children and the wounding of hundreds more in the village of (Houla), near Homs, in attacks that involved a series of government artillery and tank shellings on a residential neighborhood," the non-binding statement said.
???
"The Security Council also condemned the killing of civilians by shooting at close range and by severe physical abuse," said the statement, which was read out after the council's three-hour emergency meeting by Azerbaijan's Deputy U.N. Ambassador Tofig Musayev.

Facing mounting international outrage over the killings, Syria earlier on Sunday accused rebels of carrying out the massacre.

Images of bloodied and lifeless young bodies, lain carefully side by side after the onslaught on Friday, triggered shock around the world and underlined the failure of a six-week-old U.N. cease-fire plan to stop the violence.

Syrian authorities blamed "terrorists" for the massacre, among the worst carnage in the 14-month-old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, which has cost about 10,000 lives.

"Women, children and old men were shot dead. This is not the hallmark of the heroic Syrian army," Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdesi told reporters in Damascus.

Makdesi said Syrian security forces were in their local bases Friday when they were attacked by "hundreds of heavily armed gunmen" firing mortars, heavy machine guns and anti-tank missiles, staring a nine-hour battle that killed three soldiers and wounded 16.

Opposition activists said Assad's forces shelled Houla after a protest and then clashed with fighters from the Sunni Muslim-led insurgency.

Activists say Assad's ?shabbiha' militia, loyal to an establishment dominated by members of the minority Alawite sect, then hacked dozens of the victims to death, or shot them.

Maysara al-Hilawi said he saw the bodies of six children and their parents in a ransacked house in the town.

"The Abdelrazzak family house was the first one I entered. The children's corpses were piled on top of each other, either with their throats cut or shot at close range," Hilawi, an opposition activist, said by telephone from the area.

"I helped collect more than 100 bodies in the last two days, mostly women and children. The last were six members of the al-Kurdi family. A father and his five kids. The mother is missing," he said.

Damascus protesters shot dead
Syrian forces shot dead two men on Sunday at a protest in Damascus against the killings in Houla, opposition activists said. The men's funerals also turned into demonstrations.

Footage broadcast by activists in the Damascus suburb of Yalda showed a crowd of hundreds at one of the men's funerals shouting "the people want the downfall of the regime."

A picture released by the Syrian opposition's Shaam News Network allegedly shows smoke billowing following a blast targeting a Syrian security forces vehicle on the ringroad outside the Damascus Mazze district early Sunday.

The U.N. Security Council held an emergency meeting Sunday to discuss the killings.

The United Nations believes that at least 108 people were killed in?the massacre, the U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous told the meeting.

U.N. observers in Syria have confirmed that artillery and tank shells were fired, U.N.?Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a letter to the Security Council.

The letter, which was obtained by Reuters, said the observers "viewed the bodies of the dead and confirmed from an examination of ordnance that artillery and tank shells were fired at a residential neighborhood."

Western countries and Arab states opposed to Assad put the blame for the deaths squarely on Damascus.

The Gulf Cooperation Council of Sunni-led monarchies accused Assad's soldiers of using excessive force and urged the international community to "assume its responsibilities to halt the daily bloodshed in Syria."

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton spoke of a "heinous act perpetrated by the Syrian regime against its own civilian population" in a statement on Sunday. The head of the European parliament said it could amount to a war crime.

'Rule by murder'
"We are horrified by credible reports of targeting killing, including stabbing and ax attacks on women and children in Houla. These acts serve as a vile testament to an illegitimate regime that responds to peaceful political protest with unspeakable and inhuman brutality," U.S. National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said Sunday.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton demanded that those who carried out the killings be held to account.

"The United States will work with the international community to intensify our pressure on Assad and his cronies, whose rule by murder and fear must come to an end," she said.

France said it would call a meeting of the Friends of Syria, a group of Western and Arab countries keen to see Assad removed.

Britain said it would summon Syria's envoy over the massacre and that it would call for a meeting of the U.N. Security Council in coming days.

The United Arab Emirates requested an urgent meeting of the Arab League, whose head, Nabil Elaraby, urged the U.S. Security Council to stop the killing.

Former U.N. Secretary-General Annan is to brief the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday and is likely to be guided on who is responsible by reports from U.N. observers in Houla.

Although the cease-fire plan negotiated by Annan has failed to stop the violence, the United Nations is nearing full deployment of a 300-strong unarmed observer force meant to monitor a truce.

The plan calls for a truce, withdrawal of troops from cities and dialogue between government and opposition.

Syria calls the revolt a "terrorist" conspiracy run from abroad, a veiled reference to Sunni Muslim Gulf powers that want to see weapons provided to the insurgents.

The United Nations has accused Assad's forces and insurgents alike of grave human rights abuses, including summary executions and torture.

But remember, if you aren't going to hang the television on the wall, you still need some sort of stand to place it on. Most stands, even old ones for conventional tube televisions, will work. But they take up almost as much floor space as the big old televisions used to take up.

That's the great thing about these new flat screen televisions. They not only have better picture quality, but they also take up much less area. This is great, especially if you have a small room without a lot of extra room for bulky furniture. But everything has concerns to go along with the positives; you just have to decide which ones are most significant to you.
