Romney and Higher Ed - Janus University Blog

So far, the path Mitt Romney has set out for the Republican presidential nomination has not focused much on higher education.

Although President Obama has promoted a push for college affordability as a plank of his 2012 re-election platform since January, education issues of all kinds ? particularly those facing colleges and universities ? have been largely absent from the campaign for the Republican nomination.

Romney?s top challengers for the Republican nomination have had more to say on higher education than he has. Newt Gingrich, the former Speaker of the House whose resume includes a Ph.D. and a past stint as an associate professor, has boasted of his credentials as a historian and proposed a few ideas for colleges and universities. Rick Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator, has not discussed education policy in depth, but has repeatedly?attacked colleges as liberal ?indoctrination centers? out of step with the rest of the country.

Romney, though, emphasizes his business experience and generally steers clear of criticisms of higher education. Education is not even mentioned on his campaign website?s list of ?issues,? where several regions of the world get their own position papers; a section on ?human capital? includes a brief mention of job training at community colleges, but nothing on student loans, Pell Grants or other issues important to colleges and universities.

Few people close to Romney?s campaign or with experience dealing with him on higher education issues in the past were willing to speak about him publicly. Several Romney education advisers, past and present, did not respond to repeated interview requests from Inside Higher Ed, or declined to comment on the candidate?s record and ideas on higher education. Nor did several people affiliated with private colleges in Massachusetts and the state?s university system during his time as governor.

So the education policies and attitudes of a potential Romney administration remain a mystery. Romney?s campaign book, No Apology, sounds the same alarm about international competitiveness as the Obama administration to call for improving American education, but he writes largely about his work with, and ideas for, the elementary and secondary school system. What is clear is that as governor he had high-profile fights with the leader of his state?s university system, that he is a generous donor to his alma mater, that he thinks highly of for-profit higher education and that a significant higher education software company, Jenzabar, is among his campaign?s strongest backers.

Romney has no shortage of academic credentials of his own, including two Harvard University graduate degrees from a joint J.D.-M.B.A. program. He has a history of donations to colleges and universities, especially Brigham Young University, his alma mater. And given his oversight of Massachusetts higher education during his term as governor, he has had the most recent contact with the country?s colleges of any Republican contender.

One of Romney?s first acts as governor of Massachusetts was to pick a fight with the president of the state university system, William M. Bulger, a powerful Democrat. Soon after taking office in 2003, Romney proposed reorganizing the state?s systems of higher education, making the Amherst campus largely independent of state aid, and arranging the other campuses, state colleges and community colleges into regional clusters.

Under the plan, tuition and fees would have increased, particularly at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. But Democrats accused Romney of political ulterior motives: Bulger, the former state senate president, had reportedly angered the governor by refusing to testify before a Congressional committee investigating his brother, James (Whitey) Bulger, a notorious Boston mobster who spent 17 years as a fugitive whose whereabouts were unknown until he was arrested in July 2011. (Bulger eventually did testify, and said he didn?t know where his brother was.)

Romney denied the accusations of political motivation, saying that the plan would have saved Massachusetts about $150 million, part of an effort to close a $3 billion budget deficit. In the end, state lawmakers killed the Massachusetts plan. Bulger resigned under pressure from Romney in September 2003.

Higher education funding dropped in Romney?s first fiscal year as governor, cut from $1.2 billion to $1 billion, but increased every year afterward, eventually making up the loss. In an interview in January with the editorial board of the Ames Tribune (of Iowa), Romney said the chancellor of the system thanked him for the 10 percent budget cut, saying that he was able to get rid of departments that had not attracted student interest.

With state legislators, Romney also created a merit scholarship program for the state, the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship program. Students who scored in the top 25 percent on statewide assessments qualified for free tuition for up to four years at any public college. Romney made a personal visit to one high school each year on the day the recipients were announced, and described those days in his book, No Apology, as some of his favorites as governor.

?The cheers were deafening,? he wrote of those days, when top-scoring high school students were summoned to an assembly without knowing why the then-governor was present or what he would announce. ?I got more hugs than I get around the tree at Christmas.?

Still, a study of the program by the Civil Rights Institute at Harvard found that it failed to increase access to higher education. More white and higher-income students qualified than did those who were members of minority groups or came from needy families, although students from needy families were more likely to use the funds and attend in-state institutions.

The Romney name is also prominent at Brigham Young University, where a $1 million gift from Romney helped rename the university?s public policy center in honor of George Romney, the former governor of Michigan and Mitt Romney?s father.

In addition to that gift, the Romneys have given hundreds of thousands of dollars to the university, which is affiliated with the Mormon church and where Romney earned his undergraduate degree in English, through their charitable foundation. According to tax disclosures from the foundation, the Romneys gave Brigham Young $200,000 in 2000 and $250,000 gift in 2007, as well as smaller donations in other years. They have also donated $70,000 to the Harvard Business School through the foundation since 2000, and in 2001 gave $50,000 to Weber State University, a public university in northern Utah.

On the Campaign Trail

Romney is said to have several advisers working on higher education issues, but only three advisers on education have been announced by the campaign, and all appear to focus on elementary and secondary education: Nina Rees, a former Education Department official in the George W. Bush administration and the senior vice president for strategic initiatives at Knowledge Universe, a for-profit provider of early childhood education; Martin West, deputy director of the Program on Education Policy and Governance at Harvard; and Phil Handy, chief executive officer of Strategic Industries and a former chairman of the Florida State Board of Education. (The campaign did not respond to repeated requests for an interview, or to a request to provide the names of other education advisers.)

The advisers specialize in issues surrounding charter schools and the private sector?s role in public education. Romney is ?interested? in higher education but has yet to come up with detailed policy proposals, Rees said.

?It?s an issue he?s interested in, both because so many students are unable to pay off their student loans and the rising costs of higher education,? she said. But the campaign has not yet put together official proposals, she said.

In contested Republican presidential primaries ? and often, even in the general election ? higher education isn?t a top issue for many voters, but there are many who care about private or charter schools. The DREAM Act, which would provide citizenship to children who immigrated illegally with their parents to the United States, has been an issue in the debates, and Romney has vowed that he would veto the bill.

Romney?s advisers, including Rees, tend to have a private-sector bent. Idaho Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Luna, who spoke at a policy roundtable on education as part of a Romney fundraiser, has pushed online education in his state. Luna and West did not respond to repeated requests for an interview from Inside Higher Ed. Nor did Bill Hansen, a deputy education secretary from the Bush administration who serves as finance co-chairman for education of Romney?s campaign and also spoke on education policy at the fundraising event, and is said to be advising Romney on higher education (although the campaign has not publicly announced him in that role).

On the campaign trail, Romney has praised Full Sail University, a for-profit college with links to some of his campaign donors, but has not addressed the issues facing the for-profit sector, or the Obama administration?s increased regulation, in detail. In the interview in Ames in January, he said he likes the idea of competition from for-profit higher education providers. ?Our institution of higher learning just keep passing on higher and higher costs,? he said. ?They don?t recognize that they need to compete, that they need to keep their prices down.?

Full Sail, by contrast, holds down the cost of their education ?by recognizing they are competing,? he said. ?We?re going to have to have greater competition among institutions of higher learning, and I believe they?re going to have to become productive.?

?His focus will definitely will be on finding ways to give access to those who need help the most,? Rees said. ?I think leveraging technology in the higher education space will be something he?s focused on, based on his views.?

Jenzabar and For-Profits

That could be good news for one of the top donors to a political action committee supporting Romney: Jenzabar, Inc., a company based in Boston that sells administrative software to colleges and universities.

So far, Jenzabar has donated $250,000 to Restore Our Future, a ?super PAC? that under new campaign finance laws can raise unlimited donations from corporations, unions and individuals. Like many top Romney donors, the company has links to Bain Capital, the private equity firm Romney helped found. Robert Maginn, Jenzabar?s chief executive officer, worked at Bain with Romney in the 1990s. In 2008, he was a finance co-chairman of Romney?s bid for the Republican nomination.

All but two of Jenzabar?s eight top executives have donated the maximum $2,500 personal contribution to Romney. They did the same in 2008, when Maginn served as Romney?s finance co-chairman. (Among those who have not donated is Maginn?s wife and Jenzabar?s chief operating officer, Chai Ling.) For most, the two Romney donations are the sole political contributions they have made since 1990, although one executive donated $250 to Obama in 2008.

In November, Maginn was elected chairman of the Massachusetts Republican Party, with Romney?s support. Since then, Jenzabar has become increasingly intertwined with the state GOP: Jenzabar has hired two former Republican Congressmen, including a possible challenger to Maginn, and a former executive director of the Massachusetts Republican Party as consultants, according to The Boston Globe.

Two of the three men are working at no charge for the state party while consulting for Jenzabar, leading to accusations that Maginn is blurring the lines between his business and his political leadership. The company?s headquarters have also played host to a fund raiser for Republican Senator Scott Brown.

Jenzabar representatives did not respond to Inside Higher Ed?s questions about the donation or other political activity.

So far, Romney hasn?t dropped Jenzabar?s name in conversations about educational technology, as he did when praising Full Sail University. And the company?s clients are individual colleges, not students or sectors, so it?s unclear whether they would benefit more from a Romney presidency than from a second Obama term.

Unlike?Full Sail, most for-profit colleges have stayed out of the Republican primaries. Political action committees for some of the largest publicly traded colleges and universities have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Congressional candidates and affiliated committees so far ? largely to Republicans ? but appear not to have jumped into the presidential race yet.

Apollo Group, which includes the University of Phoenix, is the exception: the company?s political action committee has given $5,000 to Romney?s campaign, the maximum allowed in this election cycle and the group?s only donation to any presidential candidate (including Obama).

That could change once a nominee is in place ? and once that nominee unveils more about his plans for education policy.

So far, the only reference to higher education and the Romney campaign comes from an endorser, Meg Whitman, the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard and California gubernatorial candidate: ?From preschool to Ph.D., America must have the best education system,? Whitman wrote on Romney?s behalf. ?If we want to turn things around, and for our economy to bloom in the future, we need an absolute focus on educational excellence.?

Will the Sports Bubble Burst?

Having written three books about Wall Street and global finance, Michael Lewis knows a thing or two about bubbles. He also has a passion and keen sense for sports, on display in his best-sellers Moneyball and The Blind Side. Does Lewis worry about the world of big-time sports going bust? Not anytime soon. As he explains to Jacob Weisberg, sports have something that people will always crave in their entertainment: unpredictable outcomes.

Can Kindergarten Kids Be Taught A Subsequent Language?

For years it has been thought that teaching a foreign language to preschool-age children would be useless. However, teacher training institute indicates that the best time for a child to learn another language is in the first three to four years of life.

When Children Are Young, Language Learning Is Natural Process
kids growing up in a well-rounded environment learns to speak at least 2,000 basic words by the time they are three to four years old. Simply watching how babies learn to talk proves that they are natural learners. During the first six months of life, babies jabber using 70 sounds that make up all the languages in the world. They will then learn to talk using only the sounds and words they pick up from their surroundings, most significantly from their parents and caregivers. A baby's brain will then remove the ability to speak in languages he or she does not hear.

Preschool Years Are Vital Years
"During this period and particularly the first three years of life, the basics for thinking, language, vision, attitudes, aptitudes, and other characteristics are laid down," says? early childhood care and education.

As a result, it would be a waste not to use a child's natural skill to learn during his or her most vital years, when learning a second language is as easy as learning the first. Since 50 percent of the capability to learn is developed in the first years of life and another 30 percent by age eight, early childhood care development programs have the opportunity to support early learning and development. This does not mean, however, that 50 to 80 percent of one's intellect, wisdom, or knowledge is formed during early childhood. It simply means that during the first few years of life, children form their main learning pathways in the brain. There are six main pathways to the brain. They consist of learning by sight, sound, taste, touch, smell, and doing. Later in life, everything a person learns will grow from the information gained during these early years.

Young Migrant Children Are the Models
unfortunately, most American schools teach foreign languages when students are in high school. According to nursery teacher training, foreign language teaching should begin when kids are in preschool?when teachers can make the most of a child's willingness and ability to learn. By the time a student reaches high school, the best possible learning period is lost. The success of foreign language training during the preschool years can be found by visiting emigrant nursery schools in Sweden. In these schools you will find three-year-olds speaking three different languages smoothly. In fact, Sweden has one of the highest literacy rates in the world. Many people speak different languages, particularly at migrant camps where they learn languages rapidly. So how is that possible? They use sensory stimulation and play combined with language learning.

How Can You Teach a Second or Third Language to Young Children?
Infants can learn by listening, seeing, imitating, and practicing. So talk to them from the start. Tell them what you are doing. Introduce them to rhymes, songs, games, and counting in a second or third language. If you can't speak another language yourself, get plenty of tapes. Think about boarding a foreign student. Most significantly, make learning fun.

Here are? tips for teaching the children in your care a second language.
?
1. Learn by doing. Play grocery store, make a snack, or take a walk. While you are communicating with the kids during these activities, speak a second or third language.
?
2. Emphasize with pictures and sounds. Say the sounds of the language that go with a picture in a playful way. For example, "A is for apple".
?
3. Learning should be fun. The more fun it is to learn a language, the more an infant will want to stay with it. Learning while playing is the best way to learn because it creates emotional attachments, and emotion is the door to learning.
?
4. Learn with music and rhythm. Music is one way to use the whole brain. Do you still memorize the songs you learned in early childhood? Most people do because lyrics combined with music are easier to learn.
?
5. Learn by talking to each other. Having students practice a language by talking to each other over a meal.
?
6. Link numbers and words in a playful way. The more you link, the more you learn. Anything can be associated when learning a second language, including numbers and new words.
?
7. Learn by touching. Do little finger rhymes in a second language. While you sing or say "Itsy, bitsy spider" have the fingers of each hand touch another finger, as if the spider is climbing.
?
8. Learn by tasting (Dryden & Rose, 1995).Have youngsters celebrate language learning by eating foods and saying the food name in the new language.
?
9. Learn by smelling. Play smelling games. Hide objects in a sack, and have the children guess what is inside. Persuade them to say the new word in the language they are learning.
?
10. Use the whole world as your classroom. Turn every outing into a learning experience. You can learn new words while counting oranges; comparing leaves; classifying different birds, food, or anything that interests the children.

Conclusion
To learn anything fast and effectively, you have to see it, hear it, and feel it .Children can learn almost anything if they are dancing, tasting, touching, seeing, and feeling information.

IDX Civil War: Austin Listing Syndication Battle Heating Up | Real ...

As the internet continues to become the dominant force in the real estate industry, many agents & Boards of Realtors are now realizing the long term impacts of choices that they may have made several years ago, and how they are impacting their business today.? The latest news is of an IDX Civil War in Austin Texas regarding listing syndication and its impact on the industry as a whole.

Listing syndication is definitely a hot topic nowadays ? and is definitely gaining momentum as persons realize the importance of their online presence.? However, there is some misunderstanding even amongst agents themselves.

The issue REALLY needs to be broken down into 2 topics:

#1? How listings should be handled with syndication/advertisement on 3rd party listing aggregation companies (such as Zillow, Trulia, etc.).

#2 How listings should be handled among cooperating licensed brokers & agents on their respective websites that are members of the same Board of REALTORs.

?

Many persons mistakenly are attempting to lump it all together as ?all internet advertising?.? Touching on the first topic of 3rd party listing aggregation companies:? essentially, these are a 3rd party group of venture capital funded persons whose primary business model is to take Listings for ?free? from agents ? and then sell leads directly (through selling of buyer leads themselves) or indirectly (through featured agent/listing placement on their site).? Basically ? they take something for free from agents, and then repackage it ? and charge agents a fee for something that agents gave to them in the first place.

These 3rd party companies typically are not licensed to practice real estate, nor are they typically members of the local Boards of REALTORs.? This also means that they do not have to comply with the same exact rules as licensed agents that are furnishing the listings in the first place.? (Such as:? These 3rd party companies generally are able to display SOLD listing data on their site, whereas licensed real estate agents generally are not.)? This places agents at a tremendous competitive disadvantage.? They have more rules and regulations with which to comply ? and yet, they are competing for the very same internet presence that the 3rd party companies are attempting to get.

As a result, many agents are wanting a more level playing field.? They feel that whatever these 3rd party sites are able to do (or not do) from a marketing standpoint, the same should be applied to agents.? For the agents that are concerned about listing syndication for the 3rd party sites:? its all about free trade, fair play in business ? and a level playing field.

Additionally, many REALTORs that are primarily Listing or Seller?s Agents, are also wanting to get items added to the listings that are displayed such as Their Phone Number, Website Address, Email, Logo, Watermarking of their Photos with their Team Branding Contact Information, etc on these syndicated sites ? so that customers can contact them directly without having to pay for the leads.

Editorial Note:? I personally have no issue whatsoever with additional agent branding, contact info, etc being required for use on the 3rd party syndication sites.

?

The 2nd half of the topic is listing syndication commonly referred to as IDX across other agents websites.? This is where the issue takes an entirely different spin.? It needs to be recognized that there are 2 types of agents:

1.? BUYER AGENTS

2.? SELLER AGENTS (aka listing agents)

Unlike the above issue, Agents are all operating on the same level playing field from a rules/regulation standpoint of marketing.?? Those persons that want an internet presence to create a Buyer?s Brokerage, are free to allocate their time/resources/money toward that end.? Those persons that want to solicit listings and be a Seller?s Brokerage (listing brokerage), are free to allocate their time/resources/money toward that desired goal.

Its all about cooperating and working together for the good of the industry, and making it easy for consumers.? The addition of listing broker team branding/logos/contact information, etc ? would cause the Buyer?s Agents to essentially be providing advertising for Listing Agents, as the consumer would be more likely to call the Listing Agent despite the lead being generated from the Buyer?s Agents website.

This would be fairly akin to saying:? ?Buyer?s Agents should be able to place THEIR sign in the yard of listings that other agents have?.? After all, more advertisement is good for their seller, right????? It makes the exact same sense.

Listing agents already have a tremendous amount of advantages in place:? yard signs, open houses, local media advertisements, postcard mailouts, etc, etc.? Beyond the internet, what do Buyer?s Agents have that will realistically generate business in today?s market?? Very little.? The conversion numbers of customers from a postcard that says ?Want to Buy a Home?? Call me.? are going to be very low, compared to what the listing agent is able to generate with advertising their listings.

If listing agents were allowed to have the additional contact information, or branding advertisements (logos, watermarking of photos, etc), this will completely segment real estate agents as a whole ? because Buyers Agents will not advertise listings that have their competitors contact information on it.? What would consumers do if this happens?? This would be a tremendous blow to the industry, as it would force consumers to go to the 3rd party listing aggregation sites to find ?all the listings? that are currently on the market.

The solution is to separate the topic into 2 issues.? Address them separately.? And to unite REALTORs together for the common good of the industry.

Ovarian cancer

Ovarian cancer has its roots in the ovaries. This is regarded to be the fifth most common cancer that prevail among women. Mostly, this kind of cancer arise from the surface i.e. the epithelium of the ovary but in rare cases it can also arise out of the fallopian tube. The other type also originates from the egg or supporting cells and this is called gynecologic cancer.

It is a little difficult to diagnose the early signs of ovarian cancer since the signs are absent on women early on. At times it might be that the disease may prevail for months but has not been recognized or diagnosed. It is often the case that by the time the cancer gets diagnosed, the tumor spreads beyond the ovaries. At this stage ovarian cancer is not to difficult to treat but often fatal as well. Research is however going on so that this cancer can be treated at an early stage.

It is being said that less than one-third ovarian cancers are detected before they have spread outside the ovaries. Only 20% women are diagnosed early. However some of the symptoms of ovarian cancer include:-

  • A swollen belly area
  • Less appetite or feeling full quickly
  • Pain in the pelvis or lower abdominal area
  • Frequent urination or urinary urgency
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Pain in the leg

Some of the less common problems include:-

  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • Indigestion
  • Gas
  • Constipation
  • diarrhea

Women who have someone in the family who has had ovarian cancer before run high chances of having ovarian cancer. Treatment in all stages of ovarian cancer requires surgery. Moreover, women who has given birth has a less chance of developing ovarian cancer. Women, who have had cancer of the breast, uterus or the colon, have a higher chance of developing breast cancer. Women who are above the age of 55 have been mostly diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Women who have known to take estrogen without progesterone for a prolonged period of 10 years or more are known to have developed this type of cancer.

For offering the best treatment your doctor first of all requires to know the grade of the tumor and the extent of the disease. It also matters whether the tumor has reached to the nearby tissues and has spread to which other parts and organs of your body. But before opting for the treatment, you must be clear:-

  • What is the stage of your disease and has the can cancer spread to other parts of the body?
  • ?What is the best kind of treatment for you?
  • What are the expected benefits of each of these kind of treatments?
  • What are risks and possible side effects of these kind of treatments?
  • Will these treatments affect your normal activities?
  • What would be the cost of the treatment? Will your insurance cover the cost?
  • Will you be able to conceive and have children after the treatment?
  • How often will you have to go for checkups after the treatment?

Recently it has been found out that if performed on a regular basis, a vaginal sonogram with CA125 blood test can help detect ovarian cancer at an early stage. Dr. Robert True for years has been engaged in detecting ovarian cancer among women. He also offers vaginal sonograms for patients who are overly concerned. He offers extra tests to women during their yearly visits and though these tests are not covered by their insurance, these can provide them the extra comfort and relief.

It is also very essential to know what is important to the other person and what their expectations from the negotiations are. Lastly, you should be absolutely clear about what you want from the negotiation process. This means you have a clear idea of what your walk away figure will be, and you know exactly what is the very least that will be considered acceptable.
  • Learn to listen: The only way to know the other person?s interests is by listening. This means you need to pay attention to everything that is being said, but also keep your eye on the other person?s body language. Visual clues can be a big giveaway of what the other person is thinking or what they want. Once you master the art of listening, you can come up with workable solutions to peoples? problems and hence negotiate better deals.
  • Be open to compromise: In rare cases you may be able to negotiate a deal on your terms only, but it is more realistic to know that compromises may have to be made. You need not compromise on things that are absolutely critical to you, but you should have areas in which you are ready to offer a compromise. This goes a long way towards making the other party feel that they are getting something from the deal too and is an extremely effective negotiating technique.
  • Be prepared to walk away: Another essential negotiating skill is knowing when to walk away. Once you have outlined the best proposal that you can possibly offer, be prepared to walk away if the other party wants to negotiate further. This is a very effective way to close deals; however, you should be prepared to lose the sale should your bluff be called.

Steve Ulrich is a principal at Bay Integrated Marketing: www.bayintegratedmarketing.com. The approach is simple. Instead of spending a fortune ?buying? keywords and ads that don?t return anything they concentrate on three areas: 1. Most people?s websites, however pretty, are simply brochures. They say nice things about the company but don?t offer anything or ask the prospect to DO something you want them to do. They fix that. 2. Publishing is the easiest way to get the message out. They set up a syndicated site so that when you create a piece of content it goes automatically to ALL of your social media sites, simultaneously. Not a writer? They will set you up with a site where you can get all the content you want for free. People offer hundreds of guest blogs daily, and you choose the categories that most apply to your customers? interests. 3. They set up and maintain profiles, sites, and ?Fan Pages? where people can find you, follow you, and like you. There are more searches for local professional services on FaceBook and LinkedIn than Google, and you can still rank quite highly in your local area. This is a low cost, low risk approach that can drastically grow your business without breaking your bank.

World News - Pakistan finishes demolishing bin Laden house

Pakistani authorities in Abbottabad are doing their best to keep unwanted visitors away from the demolition of Osama bin Laden's former home. NBC's Annabel Roberts reports.

By NBC News

Pakistani security personnel on Sunday completed the demolition of the?compound where?al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces?last May.

"The process launched for demolishing the compound on Saturday evening has been completed on Sunday night. The whole structure of the building has been razed to the ground. It actually took some time as the process of removing demolition and removing the wreckage was going on same to same," a senior security official said in Abbottabad.

The official, who requested anonymity,?said?precautionary measures, including a curfew and heavy security around the compound,?were taken to avoid any problems during the?demolition. When asked why the demolition took place now, the official told NBC News that the razing of the structure?had been planned soon after bin Laden's death.

"A number of meetings had taken place since the May 2 operation for demolishing the building, but the compound could not be demolished earlier due to difference in opinions among the officials concerned. It was finally decided to demolish the building and the timing for the process was chosen Saturday night," the official said.

Pakistan demolishes bin Laden compound

A senior police officer said that an unannounced curfew in the town remained in place until late Sunday night.

To secure the area,?Pakistan army soldiers and police personnel were deployed in?large numbers to the?area.

"The recent rockets' attack by unknown people on military installations in Abbottabad city had created serious concerns among the military authorities and local administration there," the police officer said.

The police officer, who requested anonymity,?said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Barrister Masood Kausar was scheduled to visit Abbottabad during the day?to see the demolition, but?later canceled his trip?for unknown reasons.

Local residents in Bilal Town said security measures were later relaxed when the last portion of the compound was razed to the ground using heavy machinery.

Future plans for the lot?include the construction of "a nice park" --?with green areas and benches -- that will be built "within a month,"?a senior government official told NBC News.

Englishnews.hamrosansar.net: Bhattarai's Bihar visit | English News ...

26th-02-2012
Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai?s recent visit to Patna has shown the rising prominence of state actors in India?s foreign policy initiatives vis-?-vis its neighbours. It is imperative now that the Indian central government engage and allow states to play a decisive role in dealing with issues concerning its neighbours.

By choosing to go to Bihar, Bhattarai has reinforced this very point?that states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are vital for maintaining a cordial Indo-Nepal relation, which has witnessed testing times in the past. The state?s engagement has to be more prominent especially when it comes to contentious issues like water. Thus, be it Teesta or Koshi, Bhattarai?s visit points that the centre will not achieve much without participation of the states concerned in bilateral dealings.

During his visit, Bhattarai called Bihar a role model for development, economic advancement and social inclusion. While inaugurating the Global Summit on Changing Bihar 2012 on February 17 in Patna, Bhattarai stressed on an urgent need for ?developmental partnership? between Nepal and Bihar, which is one of the five states of India that share borders with the landlocked Himalayan nation.

Lauding Bihar?s growth under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, he spoke of ?positive jealously? and his country?s willingness to work ?as closely as possible? with Bihar. Nitish Kumar, on his part, extended his warmest welcome to Bhattarai, who had visited New Delhi in November last year. Bhattarai was greeted amidst cheering crowds and driven under high security cover on the clean and painted roads of Patna. During the Summit, which was organised mainly to display a resurgent state under Kumar, the CM pointed out the deep cultural and socio-economic ties shared by Bihar and Nepal. Referring to Bhattarai?s visit, he said, ?The PM?s visit has added a new chapter in India-Nepal ties.? He added, ?Bihar?s people think of the Nepali people as their own.?

Two weeks ago, Kumar extended a warm welcome to Nepal?s Member of Parliament Pradip Giri at his janata darbar. And less than a week ago, 11 Maoist leaders from Nepal were acquitted by a court. Most importantly, the Bihar government has, of late, requested the Ministry of External Affairs to engage with Nepal on the river issue.

The river issue is as critical for Bihar as it is for Nepal. More than two-thirds of farmland in Bihar is vulnerable to floods in Kosi, Budi Gandaki and Bagmati?all of which originate in Nepal. During the 2008 Kosi flooding, several villages on both sides of the border were wiped out, displacing thousands of people. Some of the villages are still buried under yards of sand. No wonder Kumar spoke of harnessing these rivers, which can help the state from future catastrophes and can be mutually beneficial. He rightly said, ?The solutions to our problems are not possible without Nepal?s help.?

Indo-Nepal water management is also vital to address the severe power problems in Bihar as well as in Nepal. Nepal is faced with an acute power shortage. During winter, the power cut hours rise to about 14-16 hours per day. The northern grid of India is faced with a whooping energy shortage of 18,000 MW. The current demand in Bihar is 3000 MW in peak hour, but it only has an installed capacity 600 MW at present. Moreover, managing these rivers is also vital for the agricultural growth of Bihar, which is a priority sector in Kumar?s administration.

Unfortunately, however, even after decades of signing the water treaty, the two neighbours have not been able to reap any benefits. Besides a multitude of political issues, a major reason for failure of water talks with Nepal is due to the lack of effective participation by the states concerned. The central government did not consult

or seek states? involvement in its bilateral dealings. Although instability and politicisation of water issues in Nepal has not allowed any Indo-Nepal treaty to materialise, lack of participation from the actors of the states concerned has prevented steady progress in water talks.

There are two principal points of contention between India and Nepal over the Kosi Treaty ? the issue of water rights and that of the management, control and operation of the barrage. In Nepal, the Maoist party has stood against the Kosi Treaty since 1996 calling it ?anti-national? and ?discriminatory.? Bhattarai?s visit to Patna can alter the trust deficit that has held the Kosi treaty back for so many years. The new engagement is a step in the right direction. The two sides must keep the momentum going as mutual trust and cooperation is imperative for the completion of the Kosi high-dam project?the Detail Project Report of which is slated to be completed by February next year.

If the two sides prepare a common minimum programme and framework of action and arrive at a shared understanding on upstream and downstream rights, the Kosi project can move forward. At the same time, information sharing and cooperation on water issues is also an important element. In this context, the two countries have successfully held an experts consultation meeting and secretary-level talks on water issues in New Delhi last year. India has shown great flexibility on water issues lately and is willing to assist Nepal on a ?non-reciprocal? basis. Nepal too must cash in on the moment. The goodwill generated by Bhattarai?s visit can go a long way in forging a sustainable water relation between the two countries.

But much will depend on Bhattarai?s ability to deliver on peace and constitution making. Stability and peace are prerequisites for the beginning of any friendly cooperation. Unfortunately, Bhattarai is losing on the home front. With less than three and a half months left for the last deadline of the Constituent Assembly, the much-needed consensus among the political actors in Nepal looks elusive. Although Bhattarai has said that this is not a ?lingering instability? and that ?it takes a while for the water to settle after a major storm,? public patience is wearing thin for the present Maoist government.

Bhattarai is faced with strong opposition from the hardliners within his party, who have opposed virtually all government decisions since Bhattarai took over as the PM in August last year. He has been made to go back on a number of his Cabinet decisions, including on the issue of legalising land acquisition by his party during the People?s War days. There has been no significant improvement in maintaining the law and order situation and in promoting good governance. His party has come under severe national and international criticism for protecting rights violators. Just a few days ago, the Maoists came under heavy attack from opposition parties and international organisations for allegedly issuing death threats against two former UN officials based in Kathmandu and another well-known advocate.

Nitish Kumar rightly pointed out that Bihar and Nepal have similar problems, but ?some problems of Nepal must be solved before

they could be addressed in Bihar.? Bhattarai must get his house in order before embarking on any ambitious plan with India.

Commercial Roofing - Commercial Roofing

A commercial roof is a larger, more involved roofing job than a residential roof installation or amendment. The size is only the beginning. Commercial roofs typically have large mechanical components nearby to consider when installing the roof. Considerations to type of roof and the components involved to properly install the roof are important for a superb finished job.

Like all areas of life, commercial roofing has changed over the years. Advancements and improvements have been made to the roofing area. Options are now available to the type of roof that is installed. Although a roof installed today may look almost identical to a roof installed 20 years ago, there are some very fundamental differences.

There are many roofing options to consider. Consider the modified bitumen, tapered roof insulation, metal roof systems, or how about a green roof? These are only a few of the many different types of roofs available. Discussing your options with a professional roofing contractor will help you decide which the best option for your structure is.

The choices do not end there. Roofs today are insulated, ventilated, and available in a range of materials. This creates a stronger, denser, and energy efficient roof. The Lightweight Concrete protector that is applied is a thermal shield that extends the life of the roof.

In order to ensure that your roof is ideal for your structure, you must contact a roofing contractor that is knowledgeable, experienced, and current with the changes to the commercial roofing industry. Be sure to discuss your needs, determine the requirements of the structure, and consider the state building codes. A professional contractor will be able to accomplish all of these issues and complete a quality commercial roof that is able to withstand the weather conditions, the structures' needs, and gratify your requirements.

Caption contest: Jack Nicholson has Bill to pay

By Kurt Schlosser

The only thing that might be better than a conversation between Jack Nicholson and Bill O'Reilly is an imagined conversation between the two.

Los Angeles Lakers courtside regular Nicholson ran into the Fox News host at Sunday's game against the Portland Trail Blazers at L.A.'s Staples Center. Ashton Kutcher was there, too. So was Jack Black.

But it was this Jack -- on President's Day with a?fistful of dead ones -- talking to Bill, that caught our?eye for a caption contest.

What's the payoff here? Is that hush money to keep O'Reilly from offering any further commentary on the death of Whitney Houston? What is Nicholson pointing at?

You've got plenty to work with here. Head on over to Facebook to share your photo caption.

What's the cure in the race against breast cancer? | 89.3 KPCC

Tom Worner/AP

Breast cancer survivors stand to form the shape of a pink ribbon at a Susan G. Komen Foundation charity race in Tyler, Texas, in 2004.

Tracy Grant was just 39 when she got the diagnosis.

"They asked me to stay a little bit longer because they saw something a little weird," she remembers. "In my mind I was saying, ... 'Here we go, this doesn't look good.' "

It was breast cancer. As devastating as the news was, it wasn't a surprise. Her mother, Catherine Grant, was diagnosed at age 51.

Breast cancer runs in the family. Three of Catherine's sisters also had it. They have all survived, but that's three generations of Grant women, including Tracy. Catherine says the whole family works to try to break that pattern.

"We do the walks, we give. We're just waiting, hopefully that something will come," she says. "Sometimes, I hear people say, 'But there's so much money that's given all the time, why can't they find a cure?' "

Treatment Vs. Prevention

The idea of a cure means different things to different people, says Dr. Barron Lerner, an internist and medical historian at Columbia University. He's written a book called The Breast Cancer Wars.

"There's certainly the individual cure of a patient. So someone who gets the disease, gets treated successfully and is cured," he says, "and then there's the larger issue of eradication of a disease."

In the scientific community, Lerner says, there are two main approaches to "curing" breast cancer: One is creating a vaccine to prevent the disease, and the other is eliminating toxins in the environment that are likely to cause the cancer.

Medical advances have saved more lives over time, he says, but there hasn't been much progress in preventing the cancer to begin with. He says the number of new cases has stayed about the same "for many, many decades."

Eradication of breast cancer has not been the focus, Lerner says.

"We've been focusing on finding it and curing it, so that's why the rates of the disease haven't changed but the death rate has gone down," he says.

Progress Between Generations

That focus on finding and treating breast cancer has benefited women like Tracy, who is now 48 years old. Her cancer was caught early, and she never had to endure some of the most painful treatments that older generations of her family did.

"I feel tremendously blessed because I had these matriarchs before me," she says. "I watched them go through such a difficult time."

"I was prepared, and I had a double mastectomy, which is nothing to sneeze at, but I did not have to go through [chemotherapy] or any medication," she says. "I was very, very lucky."

Tracy's mom, Catherine, says when her sister had cancer, she had chemotherapy for about a year.

"What they did then, they would take you off of it for a while, then put you back on it. Whereas now, they only give you as much as you can take," she says, "which is good because chemo is the worst. I think the chemo is worse than having the cancer."

More Than Survivors

Catherine, a two-time cancer survivor, looks healthy and beautiful today at age 74. She says that while the disease is part of her family's history, it doesn't define them.

"When we have family gatherings the breast cancer never comes up," she says. "As long as everyone is healthy, and there's no problems."

They might talk about who has a cold, but not breast cancer.

"We never have conversations about breast cancer, because we've all just adjusted to living with it," she says. "We've moved on."

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that when the crane failed, the storage box was left dangling near the 50th floor, or about 600 feet above the street.

Police closed several streets to traffic as crews used a manual crank to lift the storage box to the roof.

San Francisco police Lt. Mark Mahoney told the newspaper that the box was lifted at a rate of about one quarter-inch per crank.

Police said streets in the area reopened Sunday night.
