Just how much Entertaining Are you currently As a Home-Based ...

Description

Is not it incredible how when one thing is off kilter, a series of events or circumstances arise that shines a huge bright light on the scenario

The matter requiring focus is revealed one particular way or yet another whether or not you need it to become or not.

If you are a coach, this might ring accurate extra so for you. I do not know how a lot of times I?ve carried out a session with a client only to realize that I am in as a lot have to have of directing my consideration for the really identical concern they?re working on.

In recent weeks, I?ve allowed myself to grow to be consumed by small business activities even though fitness, family members and entertaining have taken a back seat.

Sometimes you should burn a little bit extra fuel to get the rocket off the ground, but there comes a time if you must let up on the power boosters and let the momentum you?ve made propel the ship.

In case you continue to run the ship at full power, the fuel provide will speedily disappear and you may not make it for your intended destination.

Fortunately, a series of events have expected that I spend focus for the imbalance I created. First, I was asked to write an post on how you can construct fun and balance into a home-based organization although remaining productive.

Second, I paid an impromptu pay a visit to towards the library and picked up Jay Conrad Levinson?s, The Method of The Guerilla, an excellent expos? on the motivations of today?s entrepreneur along with the vital significance of balance, family, wellness and relationships.

I had no thought what this book was about till I started reading it, even so, it was specifically what I necessary in the time.

Third, I had a coaching session with a client in which we focused our focus on an extensive project which will involve a large group of people today and require particular structures, processes, responsibilities plus a compelling vision that will be embraced by every member in the team.

Focusing on the schematics of a project is usually the straightforward component. It really is giving our self top priority all through the approach that poses the greatest challenge.

As we wrapped up the session I stressed the importance of taking care of ?self? to my client and in the exact same time, I realized the message applied to me also.

As you go by means of your day and perform your plan, bear in mind these words I shared with my client ?

?Your physique as well as your mind are the automobiles that could permit you to carry out your dream. Give them top rated priority since devoid of them, every thing else is dust.?

I essentially posted these words on my pc screen as an everyday reminder to myself. If this is what you must do to serve as an every day reminder on the significance of taking care of oneself initially, I encourage you to perform the identical.

Nadal shocked as Wimbledon reels from scandal

Rafael Nadal crashed to his worst Grand Slam defeat in seven years on Thursday when Czech journeyman Lukas Rosol, the world number 100, pulled off one of the greatest upsets in Wimbledon history.

After a day when the sleepy All England Club had been rocked by allegations of cheating and sexism, it was the unknown Rosol who delivered the final, late night, earth-shattering blow.

Rosol, whose only other five visits to Wimbledon had ended in first round losses in qualifying, stunned the 2008 and 2010 champion, and 11-time Grand Slam title winner Nadal, 6-7 (9/11), 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the second round.

It was a remarkable upset as Nadal slumped to his earliest exit at a major since the same stage of the 2005 Wimbledon championship when he was beaten by Luxembourg's Gilles Muller.

"It's painful to lose tonight, I'm not very happy but it was just the second round, I was a long way from the final," said Nadal.

"The last four months have been great for me. I lost a tennis match tonight, it's not a tragedy. There are more important things."

Rosol, 26, who has never gone beyond the third round of a Grand Slam, was stunned by his own performance which was capped by three aces, out of a total off 22, and a forehand winner in the decisive last game.

"It's like a miracle for me. He's a superstar. I played unbelievable. I guess Nadal is only human," said Rosol, after the match had been delayed by 45 minutes to allow the Centre Court roof to close and for the match to finish.

Rosol goes on to face Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber in the next round.

Earlier Thursday, Wimbledon had been engulfed by scandal with Ivo Karlovic accusing officials of cheating him out of victory against home hope Andy Murray and Gilles Simon refusing to back down in the equal prize money row.

Croat giant Karlovic was called for 11 foot faults in his 7-5, 6-7 (5/7), 6-2, 7-6 (7/4) loss and accused All England Club line judges of deliberately attempting to ease the British player's path through the tournament.

"I feel cheated. On a Grand Slam, Centre Court," said 33-year-old Karlovic.

"It was outrageous. It's Wimbledon and they do this. This is bullshit.

"The whole credibility of this tournament went down for me. I don't expect it here. Even though it is against an English guy who they always want to win."

Murray, the fourth seed, admitted he was surprised to see so many foot faults called against the big-serving Croat.

"If he wasn't foot faulting then he has a right to be upset, because there was a lot of them. But if he was, then you can't do it. It's not allowed," said the Scot, who has been a semi-finalist in the last three years.

Murray will tackle Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus for a place in the last 16.

Meanwhile, Simon defended his controversial views on equal prize money which he opposes, claiming the men's game is more attractive than the women's and is more popular with the fans.

And he believes that the men's locker room supports him but players are afraid to speak out.

"The 128 male players here think like me," said Simon, who was knocked out of the tournament by Xavier Malisse in the second round.

"Maybe they can't say it; maybe they won't; maybe they will lose $2 million on the contracts. In the conversation in the locker room, for sure they agree with me. Trust me."

Simon, who has never got beyond the quarter-finals of any Grand Slam, was lambasted by Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams, two of the women's game's superstars, after they had secured their places in the last 32.

Top seed Sharapova, the 2004 champion, had to dig deep to clinch a gritty 7-6 (7/3), 6-7 (3/7), 6-0 victory over Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova, a semi-finalist in 2010 and quarter-finalist last year.

She will next face Taiwan's Hsieh Su-Wei as last year's runner-up tries to reach the Wimbledon final for the third time.

Four-time champion Williams reached the third round with a 6-1, 6-4 demolition of Hungarian qualifier Melinda Czink and next faces Chinese 25th seed Zheng Jie, who she beat in the 2008 semi-finals, for a place in the last 16.

But instead of discussing their tournament prospects, the two All England Club A-listers aimed their fire at Simon.

"No matter what anyone says, or the criticisms that we get, despite everything else, I'm sure there are a few more people that watch my matches than his, so....," said Sharapova in an ice-cold put down.

Williams backed up her title rival.

"She's way hotter than he is, so more people will watch Maria," said the American.

Defending champion Petra Kvitova and second seed Victoria Azarenka also reached the third round.

What if you fell into a volcano?

In this weekly series, Life's Little Mysteries provides expert answers to challenging questions.

What would happen if you leaned a bit too far over the rim of a volcano and fell in? You would die, of course ? but how?

The question has garnered more scientific investigation than you might expect. As reported in December, lava's high density and resistance to flow suggest a person would smack onto the surface of a lava pit rather than sink into it.

So, instead of dying like Gollum, who dove into a bubbling volcano in the book and film "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King," a simple physics analysis indicates you would stay buoyed on top. This wouldn't save you from a gruesome fate, however: Resting on a bed of molten rock four times hotter than the broiler in an oven, you'd quickly burst into flames and burn to death.

But a newly surfaced video shows that a fallen person might, in fact, be able to penetrate the surface of a lava pit via inroads made by the gases given off by his or her burning flesh. [Smart Answers to Crazy Hypothetical Questions]

In 2002, the Germany-based volcano researcher Richard Roscoe filmed a 66 pound (30 kilogram) bag of leftover food and other organic matter being thrown into the lava lake of Ethiopia's Erta Ale Volcano. The bag of waste fell 260 feet (80 meters) before striking the surface ? and, as seen in the video, it ended up making a dent. As the bag burned, it caused violent outbursts of lava in an effect known as fountaining.

"It is frequently discussed whether it is possible to sink in lava. Due to its high density, a person would generally be expected to remain on the surface," Roscoe wrote in a video description on YouTube, where he recently posted the footage. "Indeed it is possible to briefly walk on certain types of lava if professional heat-protective clothing is worn (do not try yourself). However, the video shows that falling from a height, a person would be able to penetrate the crust of the lake and submerge in it."

Roscoe suggested the lava's fountaining activity may have been induced by steam produced by the organic matter as it burned.

Having a Plan in Place for Business Continuity Brings Less Worry ...

Disaster Recovery PlanningCompromised data can mean disaster for businesses. It?s important to have a business continuity plan, also known as a disaster recovery plan, in place so that disasters can be avoided. These plans are put in place to show not only how to protect the data but also what to do in case of a catastrophic event or some natural disaster.

This is one of the least expensive options for small businesses because there?s almost no cost involved in producing a disaster recovery plan. To help improve your chances of recovery after a major event, it?s important to utilize things such as HP Business Continuity and Recovery Services.

Having a Plan in Place

So what does a Disaster Recovery Plan entail? Basically, it explains how employees will continue their daily jobs as well as communicate with one another if an emergency or disaster were to happen. Things that a small or medium sized business needs to include in a business continuity/disaster recovery plan are:

  • Who are the key internal personnel?
  • Who are the employees who can telecommute?
  • Detail who the external contacts are and what critical equipment is on hand.
  • List all critical documents, optional equipment and any secondary office locations.
  • Detail who is supposed to do what and when.
  • Make sure everyone knows of the plan and test it.
  • Review the plan and revise it until it is perfect and covers all scenarios.

Can It Go Wrong?

When it comes to a disaster, many small to medium sized businesses are susceptible to losses. This is mainly because they were not appropriately prepared for such disasters. A disaster isn?t just a natural event like a tornado or hurricane. It also includes things like a virus infecting an entire network.

Many small and medium sized businesses are often working with very limited budgets. This means that usually their storage methods for data are inadequate. Most of these businesses are using things like external hard drives or flash drives to store data. While this is all right in the interim, it isn?t normally effective when a disaster strikes. They are good for a temporary fix, but they are not a permanent solution.

Using something such as a cloud offsite storage system is important when it comes to a disaster. When this is combined with things such as the HP ProLiant Gen8 DL380 file server system, then you can see the reality of what protecting your data is all about. This is one less thing to worry about when it comes to a disaster.

Getting Ahead of the Game

Stop data loss by keeping multiple backups of data and be sure to keep them offsite. Don?t just focus on synching data because that is not enough. Backing up data is the most important thing you can do to protect your business. You can synch and backup but don?t just synch alone. Be sure to retain copies of all files indefinitely instead of for 30 days. You don?t want to risk missing any important documents.

The Cloud is a Safe Place

Cloud storage is a huge benefit to small and medium-sized businesses because:

  • It gives you physical and virtual security. So, whether you have a physical break-in or someone contaminates the system with a virus, your information is safe within the cloud.
  • Cloud systems are user friendly and make backing up your data easier than ever.
  • It?s an inexpensive option that?s well worth the effort to implement.

Refusing or neglecting to back up your company data is a disaster within itself. Having a disaster recovery plan in place can save you from losing what is most important to you and your business. It?s the one thing that could keep your business functioning if the worst happens.

Looking for a trusted business continuity professional to help plan your business from suffering a serious loss of data? ?Call our team today, we are ready to serve you.

Scientists spark new interest in the century-old Edison battery

Tuesday, June 26, 2012

Stanford University scientists have breathed new life into the nickel-iron battery, a rechargeable technology developed by Thomas Edison more than a century ago.

Designed in the early 1900s to power electric vehicles, the Edison battery largely went out of favor in the mid-1970s. Today only a handful of companies manufacture nickel-iron batteries, primarily to store surplus electricity from solar panels and wind turbines.

"The Edison battery is very durable, but it has a number of drawbacks," said Hongjie Dai, a professor of chemistry at Stanford. "A typical battery can take hours to charge, and the rate of discharge is also very slow."

Now, Dai and his Stanford colleagues have dramatically improved the performance of this century-old technology. The Stanford team has created an ultrafast nickel-iron battery that can be fully charged in about 2 minutes and discharged in less than 30 seconds. The results are published in the June 26 issue of the journal Nature Communications.

"We have increased the charging and discharging rate by nearly 1,000 times," said Stanford graduate student Hailiang Wang, lead author of the study. "We've made it really fast."

The high-performance, low-cost battery could some day be used to help power electric vehicles, much as Edison originally intended, Dai said. "Hopefully we can give the nickel-iron battery a new life," he added.

Electric vehicles

Edison, an early advocate of all-electric vehicles, began marketing the nickel-iron battery around 1900. It was used in electric cars until about 1920. The battery's long life and reliability made it a popular backup power source for railroads, mines and other industries until the mid-20th century.

Edison created the nickel-iron battery as an inexpensive alternative to corrosive lead-acid batteries. Its basic design consists of two electrodes ? a cathode made of nickel and an anode made of iron ? bathed in an alkaline solution. "Importantly, both nickel and iron are abundant elements on Earth and relatively nontoxic," Dai noted.

Carbon has long been used to enhance electrical conductivity in electrodes. To improve the Edison battery's performance, the Stanford team used graphene ? nanosized sheets of carbon that are only one-atom thick ? and multi-walled carbon nanotubes, each consisting of about 10 concentric graphene sheets rolled together.

"In conventional electrodes, people randomly mix iron and nickel materials with conductive carbon," Wang explained. "Instead, we grew nanocrystals of iron oxide onto graphene, and nanocrystals of nickel hydroxide onto carbon nanotubes."

This technique produced strong chemical bonding between the metal particles and the carbon nanomaterials, which had a dramatic effect on performance. "Coupling the nickel and iron particles to the carbon substrate allows electrical charges to move quickly between the electrodes and the outside circuit," Dai said. "The result is an ultrafast version of the nickel-iron battery that's capable of charging and discharging in seconds."

Future applications

The 1-volt prototype battery developed in Dai's lab has just enough power to operate a flashlight. The researchers' goal is to make a bigger battery that could be used for the electrical grid or transportation.

Most electric cars, such as the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Volt, run on lithium-ion batteries, which can store a lot of energy but typically take hours to charge. "Our battery probably won't be able to power an electric car by itself, because the energy density is not ideal," Wang said. "But it could assist lithium-ion batteries by giving them a real power boost for faster acceleration and regenerative braking."

The enhanced Edison battery might be especially useful in emergency situations, Dai added. "There may be applications for the military, for example, where you have to charge something very quickly," he said.

"It's definitely scalable," Wang said. "Nickel, iron and carbon are relatively inexpensive. And the electrolyte is just water with potassium hydroxide, which is also very cheap and safe. It won't blow up in a car."

The prototype battery has one key drawback ? the ability to hold a charge over time. "It doesn't have the charge-discharge cycling stability that we would like," Dai said. "Right now it decays by about 20 percent over 800 cycles. That's about the same as a lithium-ion battery. But our battery is really fast, so we'd be using it more often. Ideally, we don't want it to decay at all.

"The use of strongly coupled nanomaterials represents a very exciting approach to making electrodes," he said. "It's different from traditional methods, where you simply mix materials together. I think Thomas Edison would be happy to see this progress."

Choosing the Form of Entity for Your Business | Legal Shield | Pre ...

Choosing the form of entity by which to conduct business is one of the
first, and often most important, questions faced by someone starting a
business. Several factors determine which form of business entity is
most appropriate for a particular business, including protection of the
owners of the business from debts, obligations and liabilities of the
business, and achieving favorable tax treatment. This article will help
you understand the basic differences in business entities and the
advantages and disadvantages of the several options from which to
choose. In making your ultimate choice, you should discuss these and
other factors with your legal and tax advisors.

In Utah, you have several options when choosing the form of entity for
your business. The entities discussed in this article are: A) Sole
Proprietorships, B) General Partnerships, C) Limited Partnerships, D)
Corporations, E) S-Corporations and F) Limited Liability Companies. Not
discussed are more specialized entities such as professional
corporations, non-profit corporations, limited liability partnerships
and business trusts.

A. SOLE PROPRIETORSHIPS: A sole proprietorship is a single
individual who owns and operates a business typically using his or her
own assets. The sole proprietorship is the simplest form of business
entity, with little distinction between the owner and the business.

1. Advantages. A sole proprietorship is simple and requires no
formalities or state filings. A sole proprietorship avoids the double
taxation disadvantage of corporations. The owner may deduct business
expenses and losses from his or her personal income.

2. Disadvantages. An owner is personally liable for all obligations of
the business. Creditors of the business can seek recovery from the
owner?s personal assets, as well as business assets. Also, all profit
may be subject to self-employment tax, even if part of the profit is
attributable to a return of capital.

B. GENERAL PARTNERSHIPS: A general partnership is an association
of two or more persons formed for the purpose of conducting a business
for profit. A partnership may be created by a formal agreement or
merely by the parties? actions.

1. Advantages. The biggest advantage of a partnership is its relatively
favorable tax treatment. There is no separate tax at the partnership
level and individual partners get the benefit of business expenses and
deductions to offset income from other sources. Partners may also
specially allocate income and losses, thus allowing them to shift tax
benefits and burdens. A partnership can be formed and operated with
minimal formality and no filings or agreements are necessary.
Partnerships are relatively easy to manage.

2. Disadvantages. Each partner is jointly and severally liable for all
obligations of the partnership. On dissolution of a partnership, a
creditor of the partnership can sue any of the partners personally for
unpaid partnership debts. In the absence of any agreement to the
contrary, the death or withdrawal of one partner dissolves the
partnership. Management of a partnership can be difficult if many
partners are involved or if partners do not get along well. Interests
in partnerships are not freely transferable. There is no centralized
management in a partnership, and any partner can bid the partnership and
the other partners in any matter of partnership business. Raising
capital is difficult in the partnership form since the partnership
cannot obtain funds through broad ownership distribution. It takes at
least two persons to form a partnership.

C. LIMITED PARTNERSHIPS: A limited partnership is a partnership
comprised of one or more general partners who operate and manage the
business, and one or more limited partners who do not actively operate
or manage the business. Articles of limited partnership must be filed
with the state. A partnership agreement would normally describe the
rights and duties of the partners.

1. Advantages. A limited partnership enjoys the same basic tax
advantages as a general partnership, subject to the passive income and
loss rules, and except that limited partnerships may be more limited in
how they can specially allocate income and losses. The limited
partnership affords investors limited liability, much like a
corporation, so long as they do manage the business.

2. Disadvantages. The general partners of a limited partnership are
liable for all partnership obligations. As with a general partnership,
the death or withdrawal of a general partner will dissolve a limited
partnership, absent a partnership agreement provision to the contrary.
Although more freely transferable than general partnership interests,
limited partnership interests are still not as freely transferable as
corporate interests.

D. CORPORATIONS: A regular corporation, or ?C Corporation? to
the IRS, is the most common form of entity for doing business. A
corporation is a legal entity, formed pursuant to state law that exists
separately from its owners. Articles of incorporation must be filed
with the state. The management structure and financial and voting
rights of the shareholders are typically embodied by bylaws or
shareholder agreements.

1. Advantages. It is difficult to ?pierce the corporate veil? to hold
shareholders, officers or directors personally liable for corporate
obligations. Protection from liability is the principal reason a
corporation is preferred as a form of business entity. Also, with a
long history of use in this country, corporate law is well developed and
fairly standard throughout the states, and therefore legal issues are
more predictable and more readily settled. Ownership interests (stock)
in a corporation are freely transferable.

2. Disadvantages. A C corporation?s income is subject to double
taxation: first on the net income when it is earned by the business, and
again on the dividends when paid to the shareholders out of the
corporation?s remaining income. Also, a corporation requires more
formalities and is somewhat more complex than a sole proprietorship, a
general partnership or a limited liability company. Annual reports must
be filed and corporate formalities, such as keeping proper corporate
minutes, should be followed to maintain the separate identity of the
corporation. Also, corporations are less flexible from a tax standpoint
than other entities.

E. S-CORPORATIONS: An S-corporation is a corporation that, by
complying with IRS requirements, avoids the double taxation of C
corporation, and is taxed more like a partnership than like a C
corporation. Articles of incorporation must be filed with the state and
a form must be filed with the IRS indicating the corporation?s election
to be treated as an S-corporation.

1. Advantages. Shareholders enjoy the same protection from liability
for the obligations of the business as shareholders of a regular
corporation. The primary advantage of an S-corporation over a C
corporation is the avoidance of double taxation. Another advantage is
that, to the extent there are losses in the corporation, those losses
may be passed through to shareholders to be offset against shareholders?
income from other sources, subject to certain limitations.

2. Disadvantages. An S-corporation is limited by the number (100 or
less) and type of shareholders it can have. It is also limited to one
class of stock. These limitations may make it more difficult for an
S-corporation to raise capital. Also, unlike a partnership, income and
losses cannot be specially allocated to shareholders.

F. LIMITED LIABILITY COMPANIES: A limited liability company
(LLC) is a relatively new form of business entity in Utah combining
features of partnerships and corporations. An LLC has the tax
advantages and operational flexibility of general partnerships, together
with the limited liability protection of a corporation. The LLC is a
separate legal entity which is organized by one or more persons or
entities. Articles of organization must be filed with the state. The
rights of the owners or ?members? with respect to management and
financial matters may be set forth in an operating agreement.

1. Advantages. Members of an LLC are not personally liable for the
obligations of the company. LLCs enjoy favorably flow-through tax
treatment without double taxation. LLCs can specially allocate income
and losses among members. There is no limit on the number or type of
members, and an operating agreement can, in effect, create different
classes of ownership interests. There are relatively few formal
requirements to create and operate an LLC. Finally, LLCs also offer
certain other tax advantages of an S- corporation.

2. Disadvantages. One disadvantage of an LLC is that it is still the
newest form of business entity and as such, is still somewhat untested
in court cases. There still remains some uncertainty with respect to
issues such as piercing the veil of an LLC, the treatment of the LLC and
its members in bankruptcy, and the like. However, each year adds more
experience so these concerns are becoming less disadvantageous. Another
area of disadvantage of the LLC is that there still is no strong
uniformity of state laws governing LLCs. An LLC entity conducting
multi-state business may find it difficult to comply with the laws in
all the various states. Also, to the extent an LLC engages in business
in a state which has not passed LLC legislation, there is a risk that a
court might not recognize the limited liability of members, and might
hold the members personally liable in that state for the obligations of
the business. However, most every state now recognizes LLCs as a type
of business entity.

Each business is different, but determining which factors are most
important to your business will help you better determine which type of
entity will work best for you.

Why do fat cells get fat? New suspect ID'd

Monday, June 25, 2012

As the world fights obesity at the human level, scientists at the University of Michigan and their colleagues have made a surprising finding at the microscopic level that could help fuel that fight.

Their work helps explain why fat-storing cells get fatter, and burn fat slower, as obesity sets in. If their findings from mice can be shown to apply to humans, they may provide a new target for obesity-fighting drugs.

By studying the tiny signals that fat-storing cells send to one another, the team has shown a crucial and previously unknown role for a molecule called Sfrp5.

The results, which appear online today and will be in the July issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, surprised them.

In a series of experiments, the team showed that Sfrp5 influences a signaling pathway known as WNT to stimulate fat cells ? called adipocytes ? to grow larger and to suppress the rate at which fat is burned in the mitochondria inside them.

By stopping cells from making Sfrp5, they were able to make mice that didn't get as fat as quickly because their adipocytes didn't grow large ? even when the mice were fed a high-fat diet. They even showed the impact when transplanting fat from Sfrp5?deficient mice into other mice.

The research was performed with National Institutes of Health funding in the U-M Medical School laboratory of Ormond MacDougald, Ph.D., the Faulkner Professor in the Department of Molecular & Integrative Physiology, a professor of internal medicine and a member of U-M's Brehm Center for Diabetes Research.

Working with postdoctoral fellow and first author Hiroyuki Mori, Ph.D., and colleagues, MacDougald says the team built on its previous findings about the importance of WNT signaling in fat cell development.

"WNT signaling plays a crucial role in regulating, and inhibiting, white fat cell growth and the recruitment of new cells to store fat," he explains. "But it appears that in obesity, Sfrp5 can interfere with that signaling, and may create a feedback loop that keeps stimulating production of more of itself."

He notes that the new results contradict previous work published by another group, which found essentially the opposite role for Sfrp5. A commentary accompanying the new U-M paper, by scientists from Denmark, notes the strong evidence behind the new findings and emphasizes the importance of further research on the topic.

MacDougald and his team zeroed in on Sfrp5 after years of studying WNT signaling between adipocytes. They and other teams had already seen that the amounts of Sfrp5 produced within fat tissue were higher in obese animals.

They were able to breed mice that could not make the molecule, and expected to see that these mice resisted obesity because they couldn't convert more cells into adipocytes to store excess fat from their high-fat diet.

But instead, they found that the mice without Sfrp5 did have just as many fat cells as other mice -- but that these cells didn't accumulate fat and grow bigger. As a result, the mice didn't get fat, no matter how rich their diet.

Looking more closely at Sfrp5-deficient mice, they saw a surge of activity in expression of genes related to mitochondria ? the furnaces inside cells that burn fat or other fuel to power cell activity. It was as if the furnaces had been stoked when Sfrp5 wasn't present, so fat could be burned at a higher rate than normal.

"From our results, we believe that Sfrp5 is an important moderator of mitochondrial activity, the first time this has been seen for the WNT signaling pathway in adipocytes," says Mori. "This underscores the complexity of WNT signaling."

In essence, MacDougald says, Sfrp5 poses as a decoy receptor for WNT signals to bind to, keeping them from binding to the receptors on the cell surface that they otherwise would bind to. With WNT signaling reduced, cells store fat and grow larger, and don't burn it as quickly. Then, the cells produce even more Sfrp5, creating the feedback loop that perpetuates the tendency for adipocytes to accumulate lipid.

While pharmaceutical companies are already looking at WNT signaling as a possible target for drugs related to bone formation, the new findings suggest that perhaps the same signaling pathway could be a target for anti-obesity drugs.

But, MacDougald cautions, the findings need to be explored further in both mice and humans. With the obesity epidemic putting hundreds of millions of people at risk of all types of diseases, that research has a special urgency behind it.

Biotech Report Says IP Spurs Innovation

There are two separate questions:

1. Is intellectual property justified?

2. Does intellectual property promote creative works?

Regardless of the answer to the second question, the answer to the first question is "no". Threatening to imprison or kill individuals, which is what all laws ultimately are, is unjustified. No, we don't deserve everything for free. Yes, it's immoral to derive value from someone's hard work without compensation. But immoral does not equal illegal. The government should, at most, be using its monopoly on violence to protect people and their property. Using violence, locking people in cages, destroying their lives, killing them, just to promote something that would exist anyways, is asinine and barbaric.

Fires burn in Salt Lake, Millard, Sanpete and Washington counties

Samantha Clemens | The Spectrum Fire crews work to gain ground on a wildfire near the intersection of Valley Road and Babylon Mill Road in Leeds on Saturday, June 23, 2012. Mandatory evacuations for some residents in Leeds went into effect after reports of the fire, which started at approximately 2:45 p.m.

A three-alarm fire destroyed two homes in West Jordan Saturday afternoon, the worst of several Salt Lake County blazes that kept firefighters hopping.

In addition to those fires and the 6,000-acre Dump Fire in Utah County, crews also battled wind-whipped blazes in Millard, Sanpete and Washington counties that forced some evacuations and road closures.

Fires that commanded the most attention include:

Washington County ? A grass fire that started at 2:45 p.m. had spread to about 1,000 acres by Saturday evening, destroying an outbuilding, knocking out power and prompting evacuations of about 40 people on the east side of Leeds.

Ground and air units were deployed to protect other structures, and authorities said they expected power would be restored and residents would be allowed to return home late Saturday.

The fire also prompted lane closures on Interstate 15 at exit 22 and State Road 318 from State Road 9 to State Road 91. The closures lasted about two hours. State Road 91 remained closed from Leeds to Harrisburg.

Sanpete County ? A wildfire estimated at about 500 acres burned between the cities of Fountain Green and Moroni, forcing the evacuation of four to five cabins.

The Wood Hollow Fire reported at 4:47 p.m. moved to the northeast side of the county through the afternoon. A helicopter and bulldozers responded to the fire.

Salt Lake County ? The West Jordan fire in the area of 7095 S. 2305 West ignited at 3:10 p.m. after it appeared a tree along a canal blew over and hit a power line, Fire Chief Marc McElreath said. The line fell in a field of dry grass, which ignited. South winds blew the flames into the two homes, he said.

No one was in the two homes that were destroyed, but some pets still were missing Saturday, he said.

story continues below

Earlier in the afternoon, Unified Fire Authority crews responded to another blaze behind homes near 12100 South and 1000 East in Draper. The fire burned two acres of wildlands and damaged about 150 feet of fence, a garage and a car, UFA Capt. Lee Ascarte said. The fireremains under investigation.

A third Salt Lake County fire at 1300 West and 5800 South in Murray also temporarily threatened fences and homes. Fire officials reported it burned about 28 acres.

Millard County ? Bureau of Land Management crews focused on keeping a 16,529-acre desert wildfire within a remote, sparsely populated region of scab rock, sage and grasslands in the Sevier Desert. No structures were burned and no injuries had been reported as of Saturday afternoon.

About 50 firefighters worked to "herd the fire into irrigated fields and sinkholes" that spot the area, said Interagency Fire Center spokesman Don Carpenter, but otherwise were just monitoring the fire for any perimeter hot spots or flare-ups.

Obama?s counterfeit concept: U.S. president?s fake-work make-work jobs scheme a real bust for taxpayers

Report an error

A shocking new study by the U.S. government?s National Renewable Energy Laboratory shows the Obama administration?s $9-billion solar power program created just 910 long-term jobs.

?That?s $9.8 million per job created.

?Even if you add in all possible ?indirect? jobs that could be attributed to this subsidy flurry, it still works out to $1.63 million in subsidies per job created, according to the report.

?Just to be clear, this isn?t some taxpayers federation or Republican Party group writing this scathing review. This is the U.S. government itself.

?That $9 billion was taxpayers? money ? wrung out of the hides of Americans with real jobs. Or, to be more accurate, it was borrowed by Obama, from the Chinese government, and will hang around the neck of taxpaying Americans like an unpaid $9-billion credit card debt.

?How many jobs will that kill?

?Why are Obama?s fake jobs ? in counterfeit industries, like solar power and wind power, that could not exist without handouts ? more important than real jobs for which there is a real demand in the economy?

?Why do people who have modest real jobs ? not ones that cost $1.63 million in subsidies to prop up, but ones that maybe eke out $50,000 a year in profit ??have to carry these fake solar jobs on their backs?

?And could there possibly be a stupider thing to do to your own country in the middle of the deepest and most prolonged recession since the 1930s?

?The solar panels and wind turbines built with this $9-billion slush fund are probably still operating. That?s not to say they?re doing any good ? even when wind turbines are working as planned, they don?t replace coal or nuclear or hydroelectric power plants. Each of those need to be kept because wind turbines just don?t work when it?s not windy. And even when the wind picks up, you can?t just ?shut down? a coal-fired power plant for an hour or two.

?The whole concept is counterfeit.

?But there is another level of fakeness to it. It?s not like the actual factory workers building the solar panels were pocketing the $1.63 million. Vast amounts of money go to a meta-industry of lobbyists, lawyers and grant-writers who game the system and find out how to liberate that money from politicians in the name of ?green jobs.?

?Sometimes they take the money and run ? like the U.S. solar panel maker called Solyndra, which took $535 million from the Obama administration to support its 1,100 jobs, and then declared bankruptcy.

But here?s the biggest scam involved with wind and solar power. It?s like those little hamster wheels. Once you subsidize them ? once you build them with handouts ? you?ve got to keep giving them handouts to operate. The moment you take your foot off the taxpayers? gas pedal, they just shut down.

?You can subsidize the companies that build them. You can subsidize the companies that set them up in strange places. But unless you keep subsidizing their operation, like Ontario does, with jacked-up power prices, they just don?t work.

?There is literally no place on Earth where solar panels or wind turbines are a profitable business.

?You can see this with your own eyes. From California to China to Nunavut, when you drive by wind farms, look to see how many wind turbines are actually spinning vs. how many are stalled or just plain broken.?

Unless you keep shovelling good money after the bad, there is no sense in maintaining them because they?re unprofitable even when they are spinning, without subsidies.

Until last year, Spain was called the world?s leader in solar energy. Then the euro crisis hit. So six months ago they cancelled $31 billion in green subsidies.

?The schemes are ending. The shiny wind and solar machinery will rust and become expensive junk.

?As Obama staggers his country deeper into recession, expect the same with his fake-work, make-work million-dollar green jobs too.

If you're a Facebook user with a tendency to make typos or regrettable comments, I've got good news: The social network is now allowing us to edit our Facebook comments as much as we want.

According to a Facebook spokesperson, "you'll now be able to edit your comments anytime after you post them." She adds that this is "particularly useful if you've made a typo and already have some likes and don't want to delete your comment entirely."

In the past, Facebook allowed folks to edit their comments for a couple of seconds after they're posted?? and only if no one has replied to them. This meant that you had to either catch your mistakes really?quickly or just plain completely delete your comment.

But with the new editing feature, you can click the "x" button on a comment at any time and have the option to edit it.

Once you've edited your comment, it will have a little "Edited" button next to the timestamp, to alert other folks of the change.?

And that's not all other folks will see.?Clicking on that new button will allow you?? and other users ? to view the edited comments history. This means that?your shame won't be hidden entirely. But it also prevents you from making sneaky changes in an attempt to make people look bad, like changing "I like ice cream" to "I kick kittens" after 100 people have liked your comment.

Ah, well. It's still a decent trade-off for the ability to edit out typos at any time.

Like any new Facebook feature, the?new comment editing ability seems to be rolling out gradually, so don't fret if you're not seeing it yet. You soon will.

(AP) ? Billionaire Larry Ellison isn't planning any radical changes for the Hawaiian island he has agreed to buy, a Hawaii state lawmaker said Thursday.

State Sen. J. Kalani English told The Associated Press he got a call from the Oracle Corp. CEO's personal representatives, and they said Ellison sees Lanai as "much more than an asset."

Ellison's reps expressed sensitivity to the "culture and conservation stewardship of the island," which is home to 3,200 residents, said English, a Democrat whose district includes Lanai.

They also assured English that union contracts will be honored and Ellison has no plans for a wind farm, even though the land's current owner, billionaire David Murdock, is retaining the right to build one. The contentious project would deliver power to Oahu through an undersea cable.

Meanwhile, Murdock's Castle & Cooke Inc. delivered letters to Lanai employees, informing them of the sale and that they'll all be retained by Ellison, with all contracts being transferred, English said.

That's comforting to English and Lanaians who wonder what the ostentatious and eclectic software magnate has in store for the island and its tourism-driven economy.

"I'm getting a nice feeling that they're coming into it with sensitivity," English said. "It's much more than just an investment."

The conversation left English with a different view of Ellison, known for doing everything in a big way.

Those familiar with Ellison say buying an island the middle of the Pacific is right up his alley.

"The possibilities are limitless," said Mike Wilson, who wrote the first biography of Ellison, "The Difference Between God and Larry Ellison: God Doesn't Think He's Larry Ellison."

Ellison built Oracle with $1,200 in 1977 and is the world's sixth richest billionaire. He inked a deal to buy 98 percent of the island's 141 square miles.

While detailed plans for the island have yet to be revealed, he's likely to do something "epic and grand," Wilson said Thursday.

"He could build the world's largest rare butterfly sanctuary, a medical research facility to help him live forever or a really cool go-cart track," Wilson said ? but only half-jokingly, because those are the kinds of outlandish interests Ellison has.

As a man who feels cheated by a limited life-span, he's like a kid who never grew up but yet is a great visionary, Wilson said.

Ellison is known for flaunting his fortune like a playboy, driving fancy cars, wooing beautiful women, flying his own jet and spending $200 million to build a Japanese-themed compound in California's Silicon Valley.

Wilson said the high-tech maverick won't be concerned with how his lifestyle will jibe with a laid-back island where longtime residents are grappling with the loss of their pineapple fields to make way for luxury development: "I don't think his primary concern is fitting in with what Hawaiians want."

While Lanaians are eager for someone who might restore agriculture to the island's economy or someone who appreciates the unique culture of Hawaii, residents also are familiar with living on what Castle & Cooke calls the largest privately held island in the United States.

"Lanai folks have always been sort of this under this benevolent ownership, which goes back to the Dole days," University of Hawaii historian Warren Nishimoto said of Lanai's ownership in the 1920s by the founder of Dole Foods Co. "They never felt comfortable about what the future is for the island. It's at the whims of an owner."

But in end, what truly matters is how Lanai will be able to sustain itself under Ellison.

"Hopefully Mr. Ellison is a little more sensitive to the needs of Lanai and maintaining the lifestyle of the people," said Dennis Hokama, who was born and raised on the island. "But the bottom line will always be economic sustainability."

Ellison is "not a human bulldozer" and appreciates the beauty of nature, Wilson said.

The magnate has a love for the ocean, evidenced by his successful quest for the sailing prize America's Cup, his numerous yachts and his thrill-seeking attraction to the power of the sea.

In 1991, he broke his neck and punctured his right lung while bodysurfing in Hawaii. In an interview recalling the accident, Ellison said the beach was closed that day because of waves as high as 15 feet, but he attempted to catch one anyway.

In 1998, he won a 725-mile yacht race in the South Pacific, but only after overcoming a ferocious storm that killed six sailors.

Ellison reached the pinnacle of competitive sailing in 2010 when his yacht captured the America's Cup three years after his team failed to make it to the finals of sailing's Super Bowl. Because he's the reigning champion, Ellison got to pick the location of the next challenge for the cup, and he chose San Francisco.

The software mogul proved to be a bare-knuckles negotiator with San Francisco officials, at one point dangling the possibility of moving the competition to another locale when talks stalled. Ellison also scaled back an ambitious proposal to refurbish two dilapidated waterfront piers after opposition to his America's Cup development plans mounted on the Board of Supervisors and in the community.

Ellison talked of turning the piers into a "sailing village" and building an apartment building on the lot but eventually gave up on rights to the piers.

But beyond boating or jetting into Lanai, his ties to the island aren't clear, and his forays into tourism ? the economic engine that has driven the island under Murdock's ownership ? are limited, if nonexistent.

"He's capable of anything," Wilson said. "Lanai may be in store for the grandest preservation effort Hawaii has ever seen. Or it may be in line for the most grotesque development effort it has ever seen."
