Crops grown by beneficiaries of the agrarian reform program will get insured to the tune of P17.1 billion over the next two cropping seasons, the Department of Agriculture said Tuesday.?
?
The Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation, an Agriculture Department agency, and the Department of Agrarian Reform on Tuesday signed the crop protection plan under the Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries-Agricultural Insurance Program.
?
Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala and Agrarian Reform ?Undersecretary Jerry E. Pacturan signed the crop protection agreement, according to the Agriculture Department.
?
The Agriculture Department noted the crop protection plan is the first collaboration between the main rural development agencies and the biggest group plan ever covered by the Philippine Crop Insurance.
?
The plan aims to give crops grown by farmer-beneficiaries a safety net against pests and diseases and the unpredictable weather conditions intensified by climate change.?
?
Over 224,000 agrarian reform beneficiaries or members of their households farming some 330,000 hectares of land and raising some 30,700 farm animals will get the premium subsidy, the Agriculture Department said.
?
These include 99,580 rice farmers accounting for 178,801 hectares, 37,772 corn farmers with 72,506 hectares, and 85,760 commercial crop farmers farming 78,633 hectares of cash crops. ??
?
The farmers are also insured against loss of life or limb under the the insurer's Accident and Dismemberment Security Scheme. Exactly 155,360 such policies are supported under the program, with the premium coming from the interest income of the DAR-Government Premium Subsidy Fund. ?
?
However, only up to three hectares per beneficiary are covered.?
