Durban - A referee who officiated in a pre-World Cup friendly game could have received a bribe of almost R1 million, prima facie evidence collected by Fifa investiga- tors shows.
The referee, who presided in the game against Guatemala, which Bafana Bafana won 5-1, was seen depositing $100 000 (R870 000) into his wife?s bank account after the game.
Also, the then head of the South African Football Association?s Referees? Panel, Steve Goddard, allegedly received death threats after he turned down a R30 000 bribe from the ?Football 4U International? syndicate, led by Wilson Perumal Raj.
This shocking prima facie evidence was discovered by the two Fifa investigators into the match-fixing scandal involving Bafana Bafana ahead of the 2010 Fifa World Cup hosted by South Africa. - Sunday Tribune
